Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

A lot of wines from McWilliams being sold on grays at the moment (1 day auctions) Possibly due to the Voluntary Administration? I was having an Old Vine Madeleine's Shiraz 2010 the other night and thinking how great a blind buy that was from grays, so thought I'd have another punt at grays this time too.

At the moment is the Wildlings Reserve Blend Cleanskins 2013 and 2014. (Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon) I picked up the '13 for $59 and the '14 for $79 . Technically I think these are actualy 'unlabeled', not cleanskins as such, and a picture/review on vivino seems to support that.

Also a heap of the Flavour Infused Fortified if that's your thing, I picked up a case of Strawberry for $9 and Spiced for $14.

Buy AT OWN RISK as I haven't tried yet, but the last Wilding Reserve Blend to be scored by JH received 96 and rrp of $50 so worth a shot for me..
Be aware they are not the "Signature Reserve" just the "Reserve". The high scoring "Signature" is shiraz and cabernet only. The reserve was going for around $10 ea last year at Dans. Still quite a nice quaffer though and bought a case of the 2013 a couple of months ago from Grays.

I can't actually find anything for just a 'reserve'? From a search they all seem to indicate the signature reserve is a shiraz, petit verdot, cabernet as well? Example is the bws link below, grays also uses the winery tasting notes for the signature reserve

Will see what turns up. Rrp on grays may be fictitious? Or maybe the '14 are the signature. The only reason i can see for using the case for a pic on vivino is if the bottles have no labels.Screenshot_20200203-222425_Vivino.jpg

This thread would be far more useful if the Dans thing was separated from all the other things....

They were first advertised on Grays as the Signature Reserve but that part of the description was later changed. I suspect McWilliams may have supplied incorrect or confusing information to distributors. I purchased my case believing they were a new release of the Signature. It was invoiced to me as the Signature Reserve, label on the case showed as Reserve Red Blend. Didn't return or make a complaint as it's still a nice drop.

In previous years I have bought the 2009 and 2012 Signature Reserve direct from McWilliams and entered in wine shows as McWilliams 1877. Both of those are a blend of cabernet and shiraz and quite a step above the wine I received from Grays.

Grays also had the McWilliams Single Vineyard Hilltops Shiraz 2017 as a cleanskin, and a couple of vintage ports as part of that auction. The McWilliams Single Vineyard Hilltops Shiraz 2017 is particularly lovely and would recommend if it shows up again.

Wolf Blass Brown label @$25 Pb seems like good buying, especially with a bit of age. Anyone had any experience with it recently?
Had the 2012 recently. Was good.

From memory, though, this may have been a bit cheaper than $25 when previously offered.

But nonetheless $25 is a fair price for this wine.

Thanks doc, did you feel it was aging well? A friend suggested it might not have the fruit to go the distance

Why? Most of us are after decent wines at discounts regardless of source.

I understand that, but as someone who does not get to read the thread every day, it is sometimes confusing as to which deal from which source is being talked about. Maybe I just need to be more diligent in reading each post in order..... :)

I opened one of mine on the weekend. Was impressed. Elegant rather than blockbuster in style.
perfumed nose. Handed a glass blind to my wife who immediately said "Wow, this is nice"

For the $13.40 this cost it's great value. Would happily pay $30 - 40 for this.

Thanks @vyralmonkey.

This DM under wraps WA Shiraz is listed as delivery only but won’t deliver to WA. Go figure. It won’t allow me to pick up in-store in my account.
Does anybody know a clever work-around for this?

@redbigot has indicated some work arounds previously that you might consider.

There are occasional glitches, some of my subscribers in Queensland were able to get some deliveries from Prahran in Melbourne, a Mosman Parcel Collect address had wide acceptance for a while, but the only reliable one is to be able to set up a Parcel Collect address in the local area of a store with the cheap prices and then go and pick it up, such deliveries cannot be re-directed. Tough luck if you don't have a near enough store with the cheap prices, I've been lucky recently in ACT.

One subscriber managed to somehow fool the DM checkout system with an acceptable postcode different to his preselected delivery address, but had an initial problem with Endeavour Delivery before DM re-shipped by Aus Post. Not really a recommended strategy.

Got the Wilding today, the '13 says reserve red blend, but the '14 states signature reserve winemakers red blend. Quite happy with the '14. Needs a good decant to wake up, nose subdued at first but opens up quite nicely, black fruits. 13.5% but had a little heat on the nose and palette, quite tannic and dry. Medium to full bodied.

Picked up some Kanonkop 2014 Cabernet and 2017 Pinotage last night at a Langton's auction. Price came to about $21/bottle with the AMEX offer. The Cabernet looks to be rated quite highly, the Pinotage will probably need some time to reach its potential.

As an aside, 10% cashback at Dan Murphy's through Shopback at the moment.
I held out on having this delivered while Sydney was having it's intense weather. Well it arrived today and the cabernet is sensational. Strongly recommend for anyone wanting to branch outside of Australian cabernet.

Carboot are doing another FOMO sale today through Monday
20% off today increasing daily through to 50% on Monday. Selected stock only.

Thanks! I've not shopped here before so I put a cart together. With $12 postage I'd only see savings at the 30-40% stage of the sale. It seems Carboot's unit prices for my chosen bottles are slightly higher than Dans and cellar doors.

I (optimistically) applied "WELCOME50" in addition to the fomo code and it said it didn't apply to the items in my cart.

It looks like the Langtons warehouse sale is back on tomorrow @ Hoppers Crossing. Anybody had experience with these sales in the past?
