Window shades

More annoying than window shades are people in the middle seats who turn their TVs to the aisle then proceed to sleep while the flickering of the TV keeps window seat passengers awake.
How can this be possible, isn’t there an aisle between the middle and window seats. ;):)

In J or F it is the person in the window seat who has their shade down but left their IFE on to flicker away whilst they sleep.

Look at the gif Denali has posted up thread.if you have the shade half open it can't possibly effect to a great extent the seats in front and behind. So a max of 10 across could be affected. The effect getting less the further across the plane you go.And if the person in front reclines glare is even less of a problem. ;)

In economy and regional business class, it's also the seats immediately in front and behind that are affected. There are gaps between the cabin wall and seat backs, and also between each seat. Light gets through all of these, and also reflects off the cabin walls, overheads and ceiling.

This video clearly shows the affect of light - from a single window - on rows in front and even on the other side of the cabin: Dark airplane cabin during fly, one window open bright light, people use screens Stock Video Footage - Storyblocks Video

I don't know what you can see but I could only see 4-5 screens where there was any marked effect from the open shade and one was the screen next to the open shade and i presume that pax wasn't worried.

@MEL_Traveller what is going on in that video , are they extras I do not recall seeing that many people in an aircraft, what type of travel is this.o_O. That window is also fully open, @drron only suggest half way open.

Well I sat in a window seat today on a VA flight from Mel > Bne. I like to look at the scenery as well as take a few photos but lately every time I fly I find the windows so scratched up you can barely see out of them. Seriously- what do ground crew wash them with ? Steel Wool ??
Ended up closing the blind anyway

I don't know what you can see...

If the person sitting next to the window pax wasn't related, that's another seat affected. And have a look immediately across the aisle and slightly behind... direct light into at least two, and possibly three pax faces (one has an eye mask on and the passenger standing in the aisle has blocked some light). Plus you can see the reflection on the corners of the seatbacks which would also affect the screens.

Regardless of the numbers affected, it's clear the open shade doesn't just affect the person sitting immediately at the window. If the OP was wondering why other passengers were complaining, the answer is pretty simples.

But the light can't be affecting the IFE screens of those behind and the eyeshades are for just that.Plus I really can't see how light on the edge of the seat effects the IFE screen. Those screens in that video do not seem to have any reflected glare.

Unfortunately 'do not seem' doesn't translate into reality :(

Even if we take it your way, there are clearly multiple screens affected. That's enough for the OP to understand the issue.

You say multiple. But you haven't convinced me.I see only a few.

Why have windows at all? Just have one every 5-7 rows to meet the safety requirements.

I'm definitely for Shades UP! Ever taken a long overland flight? I love seeing the different terrains/landscapes/shades/snow capped mountains/fog in valleys...amazing views and never gets boring! And at night, lights...small town after small town. I have seen so many "curious" things on land, and in the sky (glorious moon light nights). It's only been occasional, but I get huge kick out of spotting other planes (typically going in the other direction).

As for the effects on IFE screens - I get more affected by other's screens lighting up the whole cabin....

Let's just chill out (or toughen up!?!), and let shades up! 😁

Do you remember the Twlight Zone episode, Nightmare at 20,000ft? Its the monster that scratched the window, not the ground crew.

Isn’t this just perspective as @drron stated he fly’s F or J, I am the same. Keeping my window open would not impact 15 other PAX, maybe 2-3 at most and they have been given eye masks in the amenity kit. ;)

You were replying to acomment about the effect of glare on IFE screens.....PLEASE tell us how eye masks are going to help with that?

No one though thinks of the effect of not having exposure to natural light and the effect of that on jet lag.No natural light for 14 hours Transpac and your Cicadian rhythms are shot.

So what scenery were you going to view on this flight (from 30,000 feet) ?
As I recall the original poster said it was the 1500 flight out of Adelaide, so whilst there is light enough to see, nothing better than looking at our wonderful vast country from the heights.

I was almost thrown off a plane for refusing to lower my window shade at 3:00 in the afternoon on a Cathay flight out of Adelaide. I chose a window seat specifically so I can see the scenery. However the staff asked me to close the shade and when I politely refused I was abused by other passengers. Is this the new norm ? feed the passengers then expect them to sleep, when it's still daylight?
No problems for me if they want it down, down it goes.
