MELBOURNE Airport will postpone plans for an estimated half-billion-dollar expansion of the domestic terminal at Tullamarine due to the meltdown in global financial markets and fears of worldwide recession.

Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff told The Age he planned to make an announcement on the domestic project in the new year but, because of ongoing expansion to the international terminal and global financial turmoil, he was reluctant to commit to any further capital works.

I didn't even know they were planning to expand the DOM terminal(s)

I think they were planning it based on the growth they were seeing.... i know its difficult to understand but they may have even been thinking ahead... attempting to be able to have the right size airport in future rather than one thats 2 small and everybody screaming about how bad it is... amazing :)

Yes i think something like Perth ;)

Even though i live in Melbourne and i have no need to transit MEL i still think it would be one of the best airports to transit in Australia.

Seeing the title to this thread I was quite surprised - I wondered about the building works well under way to the SW of T2 -were the going to be suspended?

'Twas only after opening the thread that I see it's the plans "Domestic Expansion" which have been deferred - which may affect Tiger (or not).

Of those that I have transitted (PER,SYD.BNE. MEL), MEL is the preferred one. Adelaide might be ok as well.
