New Istanbul Airport

Well I have now taken the trip. Both flights on 2 January ran on time and I had an enjoyable (albeit long) stay in the Turkish Airlines lounge at Ataturk Airport.

Looks like the full changeover is still planned at this stage for March, but TK will move a few more flights on selected routes to the new airport from 10 January.

At the start of my Turkish Airlines flight yesterday, a promotional video about the new Istanbul Airport was played with the tagline “we’re ready”.

Well, shortly after takeoff from Istanbul we flew right over the new airport and it didn’t look that ready to me. There’s still lots of construction work going on and barely any planes there.

Not so much. From OMAAT:

This is an update to a post I wrote less than a week ago about how it was rumored that Istanbul’s new airport transition would be delayed yet again. This has now been further confirmed as airlineroute notes that Turkish Airlines’ schedule has been updated to reflect departures from Istanbul’s old airport through April 4, 2019.

So that means the earliest we’ll see the transition is April 5, 2019, though it could very well be after that. Below is the previous post in its entirety.

From an earlier report:

It’s being reported that Istanbul’s new airport transition may now be pushed back beyond March 2019. As of now it seems that this is just rumored, as it hasn’t officially been confirmed by any airlines.

What’s causing the further delay of Istanbul’s new airport?
There are local elections in Turkey on March 31, and there’s a fear that the airport move shortly before that could be catastrophic. It’s rumored that former prime minister Binali Yıldırım may be behind the delay. He fears that if the airport opens before the elections, it could spell disaster at the polls.

Some have said that all three airports in Istanbul will not be able to follow international air traffic control rules while operating from all three airports at heavy volumes, and have warned of serious risks related to that. I can’t personally vouch for that, obviously, but it’s an interesting point.

Equally it seems like the airport is having some real funding challenges at this point.

Turkey’s General Directorate of State Airports has just announced that she’s retiring, and that comes on the verge of the completion of this project — you’d think she’d see it through if everything was going reasonably well. She says she’s quitting due to fatigue and wanting to spend time with her family, but it’s rumored that this in fact involves political pressure, and economic problems related to the project.

Several of the investors in the airport have pulled out after racking up debt (as the project came in over budget). This debt may be transferred to Turkish Airlines, and in turn, to the government.

What about the famous TK star alliance lounge in Istanbul, is it at ISL or IST. I'm flying through there late April and would like to experience it :)

Well the lounge at Ataturk (IST) is the one I've visited, and it was excellent. I don't know anything about the TK lounge at the new airport (ISL), although I'm sure it will also be good.

The way things are going, I'd say there's a good chance Ataturk will still be running in April. (I guess you're probably going to Gallipoli?)

Hopefully it won't be a downgrade if the new one is open anyway... just taking advantage of the combined easter and anzac day public holidays and taking a side trip between london and the greek islands... actually fly out of IST/ISL on the 24th which didn't register as the day before ANZAC day until after I had booked it... anyway its another excuse to fly TK in the future once they have rolled out the new business class :)

Right now trying to decide if I should credit next year's travel to Turkish or Asiana, I would like to credit to Turkish as they have better milage rates but the allure of *A lifetime gold with Asiana might prove too much...

Reading some of those comments on OMAAT with people hoping to make tight connections at the new airport, especially inter-carrier, I would not want to be in their position. It was hard enough as it was at IST, but this is a whole new ball game.

Just got an email for my late April flight....

The Great Move is beginning!

Dear Esteemed Customer,

The Great Move is beginning! We would like to kindly remind you that as of April 6th, 2019, 14:00, all our flights planned for Ataturk Airport (IST) will be conducted from our new home, Istanbul Airport (IST). Have a nice flight!

I'll be arriving after midnight, not sure what the transport options into the city will be apart from getting gouged for a taxi fare....

So being 2PM on the 6th of April now in Istanbul, if I understand the plan correctly, this should be the time that all of the equipment has relocated from IST to ISL and TK flights begin operating from ISL. I can see the next scheduled arrival is TK6351 which is a TK freight flight delayed by 3 hours, so it will be some time yet before we know how successful the move has been. The next scheduled departure is TK6787 in around 70 minutes from now.

Apparently, a massive undertaking to tackle this move, the crazily oversized new airport in Istanbul had its first commercial flight taken off:

Turkish Airlines is switching to a new Istanbul airport – all in 45 hours

At least 27 people died during construction and the environmental damage is absolutely horrid but they did manage to open this thing. According to Germany’s Spiegel magazine, even (!) the heads of states of the all important super powers Serbia, Bulgaria and last but not least Albania have come to witness the opening ceremony. I guess that, well, such a guest list combined with the great sacrifices, together this must assure a huge success to this airport! :p

And Changi was first built in 4 years. The difference is from the closing of Paya Lebar to Changi was just 12 hours. We had arrived at Paya Labar and 7 days later left from Changi and it was fully functioning.
