We recently stayed at a Crowne Plaza. Used points for a 4 night stay.
Received 600 welcome points PLUS got upgraded one level.
I am a Platinum Ambassador.
Did not expect this.
Is is normal to get this when booking a room on points ?

Not uncommon. CP is probably the brand where IHG (not Ambassador) status makes the most difference

Well done. Being Platinum would have got you across the line, the ambassador part is only relevent to Intercontinental

It is common enough. I reckon the thinking is Platinum Ambassadors are going to spend more ...they soften you up and hope you spend at the restaurant/spa/bar etc.

I am Spire Ambassador and regularly stay at Intercontinental's on points. Basically earn them with work, use them on holidays! I am usually upgraded and also get the welcome amenity points.
We usually get little "gifts" as well which is nice.

I can see that an upcoming award booking at IC JNB has been upgraded to an Exec Room.

It was booked while I was Plat but have since been relegated to Gold. Obviously hoping the upgrade Sticks!

Stayed there last week.
Was too cheap to waist points on … Paid $122. INCLUDED breakfast as IHG Club Member.

We already had a few drinks by 'dinner time', so ordered a hundred bucks of food to the room. All items arrived well presented and at right temperature.

However, despite the 'upgraded' room, there was no comp. bottled water ( wasn't drinking water, until about 2am when 'it hit me' from the night before !! Drank the left-over ice water from the bucket !! )

Buffet brekky - all good. No issue there.

Car park was $18.

Presented with bill on check out ….
I prepaid on card, to get better rate ( and get free breakfast ) was supposed to be paid on reservation.
Nup. They claim nothing taken from account prior to arrival. ( still need to look into this ).

I found the 'upgraded' room to be quite good - balcony with Ocean view etc.

With the choice ( VOCO ), I think I'd be staying at Crowne Plaza everytime. ( stayed at VOCO recently, but they DO NOT offer comp. breakfast, even if booking on IHG Club offers …. )
