So, from 1 Jan 2019, the law is for credit card providers to provide an online facility to close down a credit card.

To make a quick $250, I opened a CBA basic MC on their deal they had where you spend $500 for $250 cash back. To my surprise, they paid the rebate 12 days after making my one transaction and within the first statement period.

That background may not have been necessary other than context so on Netbank I search high and low and cannot find anywhere to close a credit card online. Searching and I find buried in the FAQ's how to close a CC online mentions you have to do it via the APP....of all places. The instructions differed to the what was actually on the app.

Point being, looks like CBA decided to make it a tad more difficult than it would need to be to close a credit card. I've just had a look at St.George, WBC, ANZ, Bankwest and it seems relatively straight forward on the web portal.

Be good if you could close Transaction Accounts online too - particularly those ones that offer bonuses for opening an account. :)

?? That's what I was talking about in my opening post when I mentioned it was those instructions on the page you link that differed from the app UI, in any case my point was you couldn't do it via the web portal only the app unlike other banks which made in more coughbersome for myself.

Also, my following post you quoted, I was referring to transaction accounts, not credit card accounts. I don't see an online way of closing a transaction account - you have the painful ring up process.

The Netbank instructions are:
  1. Log on to NetBank
  2. Click View accounts
  3. Choose your credit card account using the drop-down menu
  4. Click the Account settings drop down
  5. Click Close my credit card account
  6. Read the Things to know about closing your credit card account
  7. Tap Continue at the bottom > then Close account

Right you are, I found it now, I only saw the App option and missed the Netbank option. My apologies, I'm having a slight degree of embarrassment presently. :)

I closed St George credit card online, but can't find how to close my Virgin High Flyer. Looks like I have to contact them.

Can confirm that the Netbank (not app) instructions above do work, I closed off a CBA Mastercard in November last year, so they have had the functionality in advance of the deadline. I have to say that having used this function 3 times now across 3 different institutions, and acknowledging the impact to those who used to get a nice bonus out of retention teams every year or so, I am a big fan of not having to talk to the bank droids to get my cards cancelled.

If you want to cancel, just ring them up, doesnt take more than a few minutes and certainly less time than talking about it.

CBA have complied with the legislation to provide an online method of cancelling

It's there on the web version...

About to close a Westpac altitude. Received the 60,000 QFF, paid it off and now closing via the online app. There are some reasons as to why I'm closing the card to choose from. Could this impact on future approvals? Chosen no longer need card.

And then the part about altitude points expiring, so they expire if you don't use them? I've opted for Qantas points so I'm a little nervous now. Can't find the T&C's for that

I'm sure this card required me to pay an annual fee of $50 but it didn't show up in the first statement. Apparently no annual fee? Can I close without fee of being rejected for future churns?

Westpac could decline future credit card applications if they have determined you are a serial abuser of chasing sign up promotions. Which for you personally is no loss. Aside from that, what are you imagining that could affect you?

Just that really.. would rather pay the $50 now before closing. Does anyone know if there a system generated closing time-frame that flags you as a serial abuser as mentioned above 30,60,90 days before closing? This was so successful Id like to do it again!!

Qantas Premier are terrible. Online closure submitted nearly 8 weeks ago and account is still 'pending closure'. Now I need to work out what the credit card number is to call up and cancel. I think I'll either call or write a letter going forward.
