Call was from the Australian Federal Police. They were calling in relation to a complaint made by the ATO.

Was tempted to hang on to hear what they had to say but just hung up
 
Indian Steve called me yesterday to say my mobile number had won an iPad. Sod off.

I'm back on night shifts and unfortunately am waiting on an important call and had to answer it. They used a private number which means I can't block it.
 
OMG! Apparently I am guilty of a cough-fest!! (sorry if this scam has already been posted - I do not frequent this thread)

Got an email on an old work email account - haven't used it in over a year. The email went on about how "they" had hacked my computer and had recorded all the cough I have been watching! Not only that, but they also somehow had also hacked my computer and used the laptop's camera to also record ME "enjoying" the cough!! Apparently, if I do not make a deposit of a $1000 bucks via a bitcoin deposit they will send these fiendish videos to all my "relatives and colleagues"!!

"They" gave me 48 hours to make the deposit. Um - do these people know that bitcoin is a mistery to most normal people on the planet, and most like me would not have the faintest idea how to make such a deposit, even if we wanted too? "They" gave me 48 hours to pay, which given their email was sent 3 days ago, means now all my "relatives and colleagues" will have received graphic videos of me in my most disgusting form!! OMG! What shall I do??

Some problems however that I foresee for the scammers:

(1) It was a work email account long dead from a previous job. No "relatives" there. And the email account is from a company long since disbanded.
(2) The only computer I use has a physical shutter on the webcam, which is permanently closed. Those graphic images of me "enjoying cough" would be blank, dark screens.
(3) The only thing I "get off" on online are youtube videos of fly-fishing. Surely disturbing to some vegetarians, but hardly shameful to most. Even so, it alarms me the traumatic effect on all my ex-colleagues when they get confronted with "many hours" of a dual screen image from an unknown emailer, where they see anglers battling tarpon in the Caribbean sand flats, alongside an ominous dark blank screen. :)

Well this is a very simple scam, tollways, trip to Sydney last month, active device positioned at the top of the screen didn't make a noise going under the sensors on the south western motorway going into sydney, it did however make a noise when we exited at King William st.

Get toll bill, we are charged something like 50/55 cents for a "video search fee". Not only does the operator want to have a minimum of about $40 in your account, regardless of where you live (ACT here!), they can charge you for a search on your number plate.

I'd also like to know why they require a minimum of that amount in your account. Also what do they do with all that extra money whilst it's in their account, got to make an obscene profit some how? :)

Easy peasy, how many vehicles pass through a toll collection point in a minute? Search everyone for a couple of minutes a day at 50/55 cents a time, nice little earner in the words of "Arthur", for those old enough to remember "The Minder'.

Sorry, we had to do a search, yeah right! I reckon it would add up to a sizeable amount per day. How many people would bother investigating further, not many I suspect, thus this could run into a very healthy extra profit.

Not that I'm suggesting that there may be any thing underhanded going on, but I'm a cynic and they are out to get you or me as the case may be.

What's going on this weekend? Yesterday I received around 10 scam emails per account and today perhaps 30 to each email account.
Anyone else having these issues?

No, we are being flooded by NBN/Telstra scam calls - the scammers have worked out that our suburb is soon to go on the HFC version of NBN.

I don’t I answer the home phone and they usually hang up, I just received a message from an 02 8279... number asking me in an American accent if I’m a registered Democrat or Republican to press buttons.
 
I continue to get 3 to 5 spam emails a day, various one mentioned above, plus the Svetlana-types who really do go into graphical descriptions about their love life. They must have given up on @drron

I did get an email from a colleague invoicing me for a service. Now I had been interested in his product but never proceeded to purchase. So with my spider senses tingling, I emailed "him" back reminding him of that point and they responded, but used poor grammar which had me then ringing him to suggest that he had an issue.

Sure enough - he rang back - he's been hacked and it wasn't him emailing me. He has changed all passwords etc, but perhaps the damage has been done. He's in IT...ah the ignominy of it.

Lucky you, only 3-5 a day. I am currently receiving 30+ daily!

Turns out a website I had registered on was hacked and now my emails and basic password (only use basic for some cough registration) are being sold and traded around the world. How do I know? In the aftermath of the SPG hacking I was offered 12 month subscription to Experian Identity Works. They have identified this and some other potential chinks in my armour.

So I am left wondering if I will be needing to change my email account names in the near future. Not looking forward to that exercise.

Any techies here that can offer advice?
 
They certainly have given up on me.Haven't had a Russian lady proposition me for 2-3 months.
