SYD to JFK in J with CX - flight report

300 people deep at cash registers earlier today at Trader Joe's! Staff would stand about every 30m apart with a large sign saying 'this way to register'. I waited 10 mins in line and then dumped my stuff and walked out. I estimated another 40 mins wait.

NYC has been insanely busy. On the 23rd I visited a Target store. The line was so long that they made people line up on the street with their stuff to get to a register. Never seen anything like that before. Approx 500 in that line!

My friend said that NYC seems mega packed at the moment - way more than usual. She gave up on the chaos and decamped down to Mexico!

I've never seen a busier place on the planet in my 40 years of international travel. 40 square blocks (including my hotel) are being blocked of for new years and this started more than 30 hrs out.

It will be (is) a soggy new year's welcoming tonight ... rain, rain and more rain ...

Yep. Nightmare around the times square area. Locked down tight. No toilets. No umbrellas. No back packs! Why you would imprison yourself in those cordoned off areas for 12+ hours is beyond me. The no toilet is particularly scary given the large numbers of people - how exactly does that work????

I'm headed to the Comedy Cellar. New Years show starts at 10.30pm.

Seeing as they start lining up in the morning, apparently adult 'diapers' are common. Some just wet their pants, they must get very cold as that cools down. Source NYTimes.

Adult diapers was my guess as well. Have to say that it doesn't appeal at all.

Is it really worth it if you have to wear a diaper
Several hundred thousand people who are corralled in pens for 12 hours plus seem to think so.

Live coverage on about 6 channels here. Not seen one person that looks happy to be there. TV commentators keep saying it's better to be standing in the pouring rain for 12 hours than in the -12 it was last year.

I'm sure I can find somewhere much nicer in NYC and have a lot more fun than standing around for 12 hours wearing a diaper.

Have fun whatever you do

just caught up on all this. Nice report! Very impressive array of drinks consumed!!

I assume you have already been to the 9/11 memorial and the museums before? Or are you not that type of traveller?

I've seen the memorial fountains. Don't want to see the museum. I think it will be too depressing.

Return flight in t minus 28 hrs. 16hrs 15 mins from JFK to HKG. Not looking forward to that and I'm in J!

For the last day I'm walking Park Ave + the high line.

Any highlight discoveries? Hope you have some ‘drugs’ to help with sleep on the way home. Thanks for the TR, looking fwd to my May trip.

Drugs: Likely to down a bottle of champagne in the lounge and at least another in the first few hrs of the flight. About 4 hrs in Hong Kong before connecting flight to Sydney.
