I've been using a Sony VAIO CR (got the blue version) for about a month now after hearing good things about it from friends and taipeiflyer's enthusiastic and v convincing spiels. Also tried out his laptop when we were traveling and found it pretty good. I was wavering between this and a Macbook but then discovered that several programs i need to use (including that creaking mid 20th century edifice Sabre) will not work on Macs.

So far so good...*knocks on wood*. It's slightly smaller than my previous one (a 17" screen NEC) as I decided that weight and the ease of carrying it around is more important than having a large screen. But sturdy, and the build quality is v good. Love the vivid graphics! The sounds from the speakers are pretty rich. The keyboard is great to type on and facilitates the efficient transcribing of notes in classes where lecturers talk at 435 miles/hour.

Most importantly, the design is simply fetchin'; a great matching accessory in airline lounges or lecture theatres or cafes or W Living Rooms.

Fierce.

For the record - new macs will runs windows software as they can be booted as windows machines.

17in screen? That is huge! Currently carrying around a 12.1in screen and am being threatened with a 14 in replacement that I am dreading...

Having had teh same decision 18 montsh ago I went the smaller macbook because I spend most of my time in Crash 8's and I can open it !

Also the battery life in a low end mac i found is equivalent to a windows machine that is about 3k more expensive
I'm still getting about 3 hours out of the mac whereas my windows machines died after 12 months

Mind you i was VERY tempted in the singapore sony shop!

But wouldn't that defeat the purpose of getting a Mac, which is for the supposedly better OS? I was told it's more stable.

My VAIO is 14".

Yes one of things about getting a mac is to use the far superior OSX :)

However the problem with owning a mac is that you can not access some programs - such as virtually every game out there and and etax software.

Being a mac owner is sometimes a trial by ordeal ;)

Not relevant; when not having to boot as a window machine you get the stability variance of a "Mac". If needing to employ windows only software tools, the MAC get booted as a windows machine and you get the stability variance of a "Windows Machine".

It's like using the IE Ad-on with FF, you just gotta do what ya gotta do ...

I'd quit my job if threatened with a 14" screen - I use a Twinhead Slimnote H21M 12" spec'd up to around a $2K machine - darn good computer - I've had 2 of them now and wont change - you can have them delivered "empty" and you load all software on them - no spywear or other cough that you just don't need or use.

Mr!

I'm not a zealot for either OS

I am particularly not a fan of Entourage which completely wiped all emails , contacts etc about 3 weeks after i started using it.

Work buys me windows machines because we are a goverment department

Spending my own money i buy MACS because
a/ theyre better value for the money in terms of robustness and battery life
b/ They start quicker!
c/ the wireless connection just connects me wherever i am, including a couple of local businesses in their carparks!

Mrscoolumbla wont have a bar of the imac with 22 inch screen at home even running windows
Eldest delinquent keeps stealing my macbook and disappearing into her room to do god knows what on the wireless connection
Middle delinquent happily plays on the downsatirs windoze
junior delinquent uses the 22inch screen imac ,but logged in windows because he can't play runescape in mac

Each to their own

My next one was going to be an airbook but this one still works!

I am planning a revamp next June (such a long way off :() which might be a mac mini in the lounge connected to the LCD and maybe a new iMac in the study for other use and the current iMac might become a TV in the kitchen....

Good way to hijack a thread :)

Gotta say macs look quite trendy too. :)
Being not v technologically savvy... that's how I shop for things like these...:lol:

Dell Lattitude D410

I have upped the ram to 2gig myself as5 12k wasnt working well for me...

The X61s are good except the fact that the wireless antenna/card is under the palm rest so it gets quite hot. Plus the fact that I would hate to imagine all the radiation going into my hand when surfing!

I've got an X61, great machine, the heat can be an issue, but aside from that I love it.

Will probably head for the X300 in 18 mths when i change it over, but for now my X61 plugged into my 22" Samsung widescreen LCD is awesome to work on, and travelling with it as opposed to the old 15" is a pleasure.

Really ? ok so my HP machine really has the nice feature of using an antenna inside the screen ! (wireless card istself is in the base but antenna connected to screen)

We use x61's at work for nearly everybody but i like my HP too much to change. (one big reason is 1024x768 is all you get on x61 but the HP's get better)

I've got the antenna on my screen on my X61.

I find the screen fine for travelling, and use a 22" LCD in the office/home.

We've just had a few users 'trial' the X300s and most of them have decided to change their X61 for an X300, note however there's no docking station for the X300. Only a port replicator.

Actually I may be wrong, I think its just the card under the palm rest. The X61 tablet has a higher resolution. Yes the res of the normal x61 is a major drawback for me.
