Interesting article more from the point of view of what it doesn’t say vs what it does. There is no doubt increased in tourism, especially from places where the society operates very differently to Japan, causes problems.

The Japanese are still polite and gracious.More so nowadays if you are obviously respecting their culture.I earnt respect when overheard pointing out that the great majority of the crowds at Nara were Chinese not Japanese to an ignorant American.
Also in Kyoto when I remarked that the tattooed young western women wearing kimonos were also being disrespectful.

The Chinese and Japanese aren't great friends at any time and with increased numbers of mainland Chinese travelling there are bound to be some cultural clashes.

The Hong Kong Chinese have made some pointed comments about mainland Chinese who visit the SAR.

This isn't just restricted to Japan as per several other posts over the last little bit. Big problems in Laos, but they have money to spend which makes for a difficult situation.

Concentrate on areas where people from the PRC don't visit, or as yet haven't found? Vietnam and India probably fit that bill at the moment, but for how long?

One of the reasons why I enjoy Eastern Europe - few locusts find their way there!

The Japanese are too polite to say what they really believe about certain tourists. Most tourists’ behaviour are forgiven/tolerated. They won’t even bat an eyelid at most egregious but will comment behind the scenes

Japan is monocultural.

Pretty sure you will find locals in Cairns, GC, etc with the same views about Japanese group tours. These things happen, just ask the French, Italians, Croatians....

Plenty Japanese and Koreans in Hawaii but strangely almost no Chinese. Enjoy the serenity while it lasts.

Maybe, but not all, when I visited the GC in the 90s, there were many touristy shops which had signs on their doors stating ‘Japanese tourists only permitted’...

You can only the imagine the rip offs going on inside.

Got talking to a lady from the Czech Republic at a WRC event in Sardinia a few months ago, she works in an antique shop in Prague, she made a comment that her least favourite customers were from Russia and the PRC. Her words were "'too much money and too little taste"!
