Re: Help with cheapest way to earn SC Melbourne - Brisbane return

My high school math skills say that if you were to be 1200 points short of re-qualifying QFF WP, there would have been NO flights credited (from anywhere) Which would imply a total absence of ~

Just wandering

Fred

Not quite true.......I had several MU flights that credited to QF.....but obviously no ~ or SC. :)

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

My membership year ended on 31 July. I have been silver status for a couple of years but hadn't done enough flying over the past year to maintain it.

Whenever I've logged into the Qantas website over the past couple of weeks, the masthead said something like "Congratulations on reachieving Silver". I ignored it as I thought it was just the slow "changeover to new status" as discussed in other threads.
Gold yanked - thoughts?

However, today I received my new Qantas (silver) card in the mail and the letter does indeed say "Keep your silver status with our compliments". Probably not a huge thing when compared to the many gold and platinum members in this fora but I'm quite happy to receive a complimentary lounge invitation!

Is comped status as common as it seemed to be a couple of years ago?

Interesting. Maybe comp silver is the "carrot" that costs them basically nothing and makes people feel warm and fuzzy? Interesting if this is a thing now or for another reason. At any rate congrats on retaining Silver.

Did you have a reasonable level of SC's earned* over the last years or so?

(*Earned, as in not bonus SC's)
Basically all the SCs were earned. From memory, I think there was only one (or, at the most, two) return trips in the past couple of years that earned double SCs. And they would have been short Sydney/Melbourne or Sydney/Brisbane flights. So only 30-40 bonus SCs in total.

I just logged into my QF account, thinking that I might have to claim some slow-crediting recent QR flights that I knew would have me over the line by my anniversary date of 31 August. I’m in the last throes of a DONE5. I left home on 23 June with zero SCs and zero squiggles for the current year.

But it looks like I’ve just been comped WP so I won’t bother chasing them. I’ve been WP for probably 15 years straight, accruing a steady 1600-1800 SCs/year in each of the last ten years.

Of course, the other explanation is that they have, in the last week of my FF year, looked at my bookings and realised I was going to reach the required level anyway and therefore it’s not strictly a comp.

Looks good John, but remember to check it after say the first week of September in case it isn't a "glitch" as has been reported before. Hmm maybe the new manager running Loyalty has changed the policy on this?! That would be an Enhancement for sure :D

fingers crossed for you that it sticks!

The flights that I have recently taken, but have yet to post, plus flights that I will take by 31 August, will guarantee WP renewal so I have no concerns.

Reflecting on the situation, as noted in my follow-up post #448, it may not be a comp at all. Rather, I’m now wondering if at a week out from year-end they look at bookings to anticipate what is going to happen.

After all, they wouldn’t want the embarrassment of dropping you back, only to find slow-posting partners (eg. LA, QR), caused them to have to recant.

They were happy to drop me back earlier this year and let me chase owed SC's for 6 weeks before recanting :(

I believe this is the reason I received a congratulatory extra year subscription on Epicure due to slow posting SC while travelling overseas. It took awhile before they dropped me back to Platinum after being P1. But kept the complimentary 12 month membership and the great wine from Epicure which is now called QantasWine ( not Whine as in Engine Whine)

John sadly I think you're giving QF a little too much credit for using the technology to their advantage lol.

Besides, there's a simple reason they would not anticipate future bookings in terms of tking status into account - you could cancel or change them at any time prior to departure, so there's zero reason for them to pre-empt

Further, If flights booked but not yet credited were on partner airlines, they would almost certainly have no way of knowing about these until they credited to QFF, unless those flights were part of a QF issued booking (and thus they would have visibility)

bu tno, I think it's a bit much to consider that QF might take future bookings into account proactively. Possibly as a manual intevention as a special case, but I very much doubt anything would be done proactively.

IMHO.

I've had several PNRs with partner airlines, namely MH and JL, show up in the Qantas app without doing anything except enter my QFF number when booking. The PNRs didn't contain any QF coded flights.

I'm not sure whether the partner airline sends a request to Qantas to confirm my FF tier (to determine seat selection entitlements, for example) or whether Amadeus notifies Qantas that a QFF member has made a booking on another carrier, but either way, Qantas definitely knew about it before I flew.

You’re very likely correct, so it looks like I have been comped. I only threw in the other idea as a possibility - however unlikely. My flights with QR are on a QF booking as part of my DONE5 issued by QF.

In any event, I was never concerned as I knew I would requal.

Yes the bookings show up as they share Amadeus and a common PNR, and obviously the FF membership number is a key to access those.

So OK, in theory QF can "see" those bookings, but only due to Amadeus.

I think when you book with a partner flight and pop your FF# in, then that partner queries QFF for the status information. They may or may not poll again on check in to determine updated FF info or not (for example, a long time ago flying NZ with a booking created when I had UA status which showed, but when I actually flew the flight months later I'd lost the status, but it still showed on the BP - which would have been handy if it was *G, alas only *S).

At any rate I still say there's little reason for an airline to take into account future bookings as they can change or cancel. I mean heck if it was the case I'll book 5 full F tix to LHR, get me my P1, then cancel them :)

I am just wondering if what just happened to me has happened to others here. I have been WP for 9 straight years and on my anniversary received a message on the web page congratulating me on retaining Platinum. i thought I had been comped. I only had 70 scs this year due to some health issues and 4 QF flights. A week later it all changes to Gold.

Unfortunately common; I had the same thing in July.
