Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The delayed QF1 ex SYD departed SIN at 0138 on Friday 3 with LHR arrival forecast as 0750 hours, 55 late.

A332 VH-EBC on QF411 (0730 hours SYD down to MEL that was airborne at 0817) looks to be arriving at 0942, 37 late.

What must be QF's worst southeast Asian route for keeping to timetable, SYD - BKK, is at it again with QF23 on Friday 3 August 2018 expecetd to depart 105 late at 1135. Projected arrival is 1815, 95 late.

QF129 (A333 VH-QPA), the 0930 hours SYD - PVG was airborne at 1029 after puhing back at 0948, so quite slow due to a fairly long queue of aircraft on 34L.

QF130 ex PVG should arrive in SYD at 1103 hours, 98 late.

The B744 on QF73, the 1245 hours SYD to SFO is expected to depart at 1655 this arvo, 250 minutes late. It is being formed by QF64 that should arrive 26 early at gate 8 at 1434. Has another B744 failed?

QF764 cancelled Adelaide to Sydney. Went to the runway and back back with failed pitot tube heater.

Passengers now off the plane (I'm one of them) waiting around.

Substitute 737 on the way, departure time now 7pm for those not transferred to other flights. Hopefully a nice empty plane!

Rather topical at the moment due to the MH "incident" from (and back to) BNE.

QF764 (perhaps now 'QF764D') is VH-VXO. This 1605 hours ADL - SYD was airborne at 1918 so will be a little under three hours late arriving in Sydney tonight. Hope you could stretch out on three seats BAM1748.

Also on Friday 3 August 2018, the 1925 hours MEL up to BNE - QF634 with B789 VH-ZND, QF's second youngest aircraft - took off at 2013 so arrival should be at 2204 tonight, 39 late.

QF550 (B738 VH-XZJ, the 1930 hours SYD - BNE that did not become airborne until 2115) should arrive 91 late at 2231 tonight.

Saturday 4 August has seen QF24 arrive ex BKK in SYD at 0839, 134 late due to the delayed QF23 on Friday.

The 0950 hours SYD - BKK, QF23 was expected to depart at 1030 but is doing so later.

Since yesterday (3 August), QF81, the 1015 hours SYD - SIN has become an A388 in lieu of the previous A333 or A332. Today it is VH-OQE.

QF33, the 1015 hours SYD - KIX has A333 VH-QPA. It pushed back at 1053 and took off at 1120 hours, so arrival is suggested as 1951 hours this evening, 41 late. QF34 back down overnight to SYD will be slightly delayed.

QF127, the 1035 hours SYD - HKG has been cancelled as has tonight's QF128, the 2000 hours redeye back down to SYD. Does anyone know why?

Friday 3's 1810 hours QF12 departed JFK at 1936, 86 late, then took off at 2017 with arrival in LAX likely at 2319, 139 minutes tardy. QF16 is showing as departing at 0130 on Saturday (130 late) for a predicted Sunday 5 BNE arrival at 0755, 110 late. Strangely the onwards QF12 (the A388) is claimed to be departing on time but that would not be usual in such circumstances when the ex JFK connection is tardy. QF96, the B789 to MEL is estimated to depart LAX 35 late at 0030 on Saturday.

QF117 is normally an A330, but today is a 747, so looks like the may have combined the QF127 with QF117 pax. QF117 is packed to the rafters, so to speak.

In more on Saturday 4 August, QF107 (A332 VH-EBG), the 1210 hours lunchtime SYD - PEK departed 44 late, so arrival at 2255 tonight will be 40 late. QF108 (redeye) will be slightly delayed as the timetable mandates a pushing back at 2345 hours.

On Saturday 4, QF12 departed LAX at 0047 (137 minutes late) so Sunday 5 SYD arrival is suggested as 0845 hours, 135 late.

Sunday 5 August sees QF29, a flight that has been delayed on many recent days changed to depart MEL at 1145 (130 late) with HKG arrival estimated at 1925, 125 late. QF30 and QF80 arrived early in MEL this morning so not sure why the delay.

QF79 (0910 hours MEL up to NRT) pushed back 31 late with suggested arrival at 1906, 31 late.

The 1245 hours SYD - SFO is not operating today (and nor is QF74 back) but this may have been planned.

QF581 (1025 hours SYD - PER) took off at 1102 with By744 VH-OEB and will overfly MEL by the looks of its route (although at 10000m). PER arrival should be at 1345, 35 late. As mentioned elsewhere on AFF, use of the B744s on this route is not every day, but sometimes it is two return trips in one day (using a different aircraft for each return flight).

Also on Sunday 5 August, A388 VH-OQI on QF35 (1155 hours late morning MEL up to SIN) took off at 1237 so with adverse winds, arrival is predicted at 1833, 38 late in the early evening.

QF29 ended up departing MEL at 1150 with HKG arrival estimated at 1950 tonight, 150 minutes late. Aircraft is A333 VH-QPJ.

The 1200 'high noon' BNE down to CBR, QF1547 has B77 VH-NXR. It was airborne at 1251, about 35 late so expected arrival is 1422 this afternoon, 32 late.

L1925, if you are on it, can you advise what arrangements have or are being made for out of towners and local residents?

Hotel plus meals for the former, and bus transfers to which hotel(s)? Return taxi/Uber vouchers for latter?

vandy, great pickup.

My hypothesis has been that the flights at less 'memorable' times (such as an 0745 hours SYD to MEL) would be more likely to be cancelled because passengers prefer to book on say the 0800 hours or the 0730 - they don't think in quarter hour blocks, and most don't care or don't know what the aircraft type is, and anyway most are B738s - but that's wrong for tomorrow as QF415 is the 0800 southbound.

It might reflect ongoing flight crew shortages for B738s, although one would think Monday morning would usually be only bettered by Friday night in terms of demand for seats.

Any other theories, or in the case of milehighclub knowledge? The winds in MEL today don't appear to have mucked up the schedules.

I was in business so had several options.

1. Fly in economy to sydney on the red eye tonight

2. Fly business to brisbane at 2305 tonight then business to sydney arrive at 0735 tomorrow morning

3. Fly to melbourne straight away(economy), pay my own accomodation in melbourne then business to sydney early morning. (Ive only got carryon)

4. stay in perth tonight then fly business tomorrow arrive approx 11:20am tomorrow (they cover accomodation in perth with meal voucher).

I Chose option 2 and the counter lady was quite nice trying to deal with the 10 odd business travellers in front of her. Not her fault

Unsure of what they were offering economy travellers.

...

L1925, great information.

By the sound of things you got served quite quickly so kudos to the lady as it must take a bit of keyboarding to accommodate each of 10 travellers with different desires.

According to FR24, you have an 'A330' on QF652, the 2305 hours PER - BNE redeye. Although FR24 disagrees, from the allocated gate numbers you may be formed by QF481, the 2120 hours scheduled arrival in PER that is at this stage seven minutes early: A332 VH-EBE.

Had I been you, I would have stayed overnight in PER but to get to the east coast at a reasonable hour means a very early start so I understand why you knocked that back. At least the BNE-bound flight is longer than to say MEL, so you have the chance for a little more shut eye.

Surprising that on a Sunday night ex PER, or Monday morning ex BNE that there are J seats available.

Hi Melburnian1,

I actually wasnt too fussed, Unlike a couple of other travellers who were not very happy I just asked the lady book me on to what is easier for her as she had enough to deal with.

Leaving late tonight is easier than going to a hotel then coming back in the morning. Sitting in the business lounge, red wine, food and jelly beans I can’t really complain.

Fortunatly both car hire and hotel bookings easily moved without a charge.

Yes I was suprised that J seats were available on both legs.

Better run, lounge attendants just brought out cheese platters!! :)

One of the best ever contributions to the delay/cancellations threads! Looks a lovely spread, and you have three hours to go until boarding.

AFF resident vintners can advise as to whether jelly beans go with a red. Not a combo I've seen before, but hey...

If you have not tried Jelly Beans and red wine you don’t know what your missing out on :) the red helps kill time while the jelly beans help boost the blood sugars to help with talking to all the others with delayed flights hehe.

Another announcement from qantas in the lounge, both of tonights melb and brisbane flights dont have operational ipads so they have advised to download the “new qantas entertainment app and delete the old version”. Interesting as its the 4th flight this fortnight that they have not been working including the earlier cancelled flight this afternoon
