Points upgrade (de)value?

I was thinking of requesting an upgrade to PE or J on QF9 but am aghast at the want of 120k points for the privilege (or 75k) for PE.

Have I forgotten what this used to cost, or has the cost of upgrades shot up? This pegs an upgrade at pretty much the same, if not higher price than a J award booking. These points are on top of the $1200 component of the Y saver fare.

On pts/$ basis do the experts still consider this worth while?

A full J class ticket is 126K one way. To pay 120K for an upgrade seems to put you on the downside of value for money.

That's more in line with what I expected.

Yes, it's a saver revenue fare. Considering most flights have sale fares at <$700, I already had to pay a $600 premium just to get on the flight and also it's the cheapest upgradeable offering (I had very inflexible timing requirements where even the hours were important).

The number of points needed to upgrade is much more reasonable from flexible fares but then to purchase flexible fares you have to pay a lot more for the privilege and still may miss out on the upgrade. Flexible fares do earn more SCs.

If I'm looking for an upgrade and willing to stretch to Flexible Economy I check if there's a sale on discount PE fares as that can bring the discount PE pricing down close to Flexible Economy pricing.

I agree, but the upgrade lottery being what it is, Qantas generally loses out on my $1000 extra I'd throw in if there was certainty on the upgrade. You might as well go for the cheapest sale fare with their current process (at least when it is my own money).
The status credit yield between saver and flexi is marginal as an LTG who's not likely to see WP again.
