Avoiding the Qantas 787

I suspect the next gen of aircraft won't have windows at all.

Rather a strip of screens projecting the view (as per EKs new internal F suite).

Much cheaper skin construction and better heat/noise insulation. And I suspect complete control by the crew.
And a safety hazard. There are safety reasons to have the windows.
They wouldn't design larger windows in the current gen new aircraft designs, only to get rid of them entirely in the next.

I did the LHR-PER in 11A. One and done. I will be avoiding the 787. I was uncomfortable. If I had to do it again, I would consider PE. But even then it would have to be a last resort.
My main complaint is I am tall. Not abnormally tall, but long enough legs to be cramped. I could not bend my knees. Nor could I turn. I am sure there are people taller then me if find these seats great. I am only speaking for my personal experience and why I will avoid the 787 moving forward

I don’t like flying in Y on short hops. It must have been hell!

Isn't 11A business class on a 787? I'm flying LHR to PER in October and my seat map shows up to row 12 as business.

Oops. My mistake. I misunderstood the reference.
In that case I will definitely avoid this option.
Which begs the question “why consider PE next time”?

Sorry I was in J. Should have been more clear.
IF for some odd reason I have to fly on a QF 787 I would consider doing PE because at least I would be able to stretch my legs. It was that uncomfortable for me, that it would be interesting to try PE. BUT it would have to be irrops and a serious need for me to be getting wherever I am going for to me to fly PE.

I still don't understand how you could possibly be 'squashed' in the J suite there is plenty of room.. am I missing something, can you elaborate more on how it was uncomfortable?

Please do! I'm 5'7, but the husband is 6'1 so he wouldn't want to be flying for 17 hours if J is squished!

I'm guessing the OP's referring to the lie flat position where it is indeed difficult, if not impossible, to bend your knees.

If J is too squishy on the 787 then soon the OP will have no option with the A380 being updated to the same suite. I am not tall and I find the size of the foot well too small and getting in and out of the suite challenging at times. I will miss the width and ease of getting in and out of the sky bed along with the overall feeling of room of the skybed MK2 on the A380.

I’ve only flown in that J on the 330, and I’d have to admit that I didn’t like it much. I know the Skybeds have their own issues, but I much prefer them.

There's a little more lateral footroom in the bulkhead seats, especially the centre ones. But it still is still a clamber. I am 183cm.

I have experienced row 1 a number of times and whilst I agree better leg space the constant noise and in and out from the Galley was rather bothersome, this was on the A330 not the 787 I should add.

Just imagine, if you will, that out of the blue, QF decides to buy and operate one, or two at the most, Airbus350s.
The SQ Airbus350 J seats look very cushiony.
I know, in all seriousness they probably won't.
Now that would be something to look forward to, but I will just dream on.
Remaining OT for a moment. I think the SQ J seating is awful.

I flew QF9 in Y on a domestic ticket MEL-PER a couple of days ago. Those seats are narrow.

On the plus side I was in 40D which is a bulkhead row aisle seat in the middle section. There was no one in the middle and it was a rare arm rest you could raise for a bulkhead so actually had a lot of room. Would have been different with someone next to me though.

I may however have to turn in my AFF card, the CSM came and welcomed me (WP) and asked if I would like a more comfortable seat up the front. I said “actually I’ve got plenty of space here so no thank you”.

Will I be drummed out of AFF?
