Yup, and should probably be the only number in question. I'm my math is correct, just over 27 of those 65 days are time in lieu based on their standard week. If you took penalty rates into account, that would actually turn into 47 days. Then add the 20 any full time employee gets and you're at 67 days. So you could make the argument that they get less than they're entitled to.
65 days divided by 7 = 9 and a bit weeks leave.

Like many of us I get to choose (or at least negotiate) when I get my holidays whereas firefighters don't have a say in when or for how long.

Though I think it was worked out at 65 days divided by 5 (as in the working week). Can't remember whether it should be 5 or 7 for the formula.

Earlier, it was revealed five athletes from the African nation had gone missing from the athletes village.

The African nation of Cameroon has lost one-third of its Commonwealth Games team while competing on the Gold Coast.
By Wednesday afternoon, Cameroon officials revealed eight out of the 24 athletes on their team had gone missing from their rooms in the games village.
A spokesman for the Australian Border Force said the federal government was working closely with the Games organising committee and international stakeholders to ensure officials and athletes were aware of their visa responsibilities.

On the teacher salary discussion I was also going to mention the holiday tax i.e. can only go on holidays at certain times and thus costs more. Only way around that is leave without pay or long service leave which for many is not an option.

We're keeping up with the worst of them in regards to unfunded Gov super obligations. The number as of 2015 was 143B .... not bad given we're only 114 years old (1901 - 2015), pension funds / super haven't been around for that long and, our population is around the size of New York!
 
Today in Adelaide was one of our wicked hot days. Dust storms. Hot northerly winds. All of SA affected. So far, no large bushfires. Power stayed on. And in a few hours it will be cooler. Reckon in mid summer the temp would have been in high 40’s. Well, it was around 39 according to my car anyway.

Just walked home from dinner and it's still not nice out there - back in NZ next week - temperature there was 11 today - I know where I'd rather be

This doesn't include military (who's defined benefits ceased recently like not that far back. Yikes Kentucky teachers still on a defined benefits scheme, no wonder they wanted to keep it!)

Most state Govt have serious super shortfalls except Queensland (even if the excessive net earnings were raided by their State Govt) so $143 b may understate the full liabilities but may overstate the deficit?
 
Someone on twitter has been stalking our retired PMs and their expenses.Probably cherry picked but in the first 6 months of 2014 Kevin's monthly mobile bill ranged from ~ $2700 to ~ $9750.
Last 6 months of 2016 Julia's mobile bill ranged from $36 to $68.

A friends wife is a headmistress at a Sydney public school. She's on ~$120,000/year. She's just had 12 months off work on paid long service and other leave. She will retire soon with a superannuation of 80% of that salary. That's a nice problem to have.

Another friend was a teacher for many years and retired early over 10 years ago to work at Australia Post. He has great superannuation from his teaching days. His wife was also a public servant and is on $100,000+ superannuation a year.

One of my biggest regrets when I first started working in the mid 80's was thinking that working for the private sector was better than the public sector. What absolute rubbish.

Well yes and no. Private didn't have super til 1992......and flexi working hours what are they ? So on so forth

The defined benefits schemes that are likely to be mentioned above are no longer available in any of the Australian public services. The Military scheme was the last Federal scheme closed. So those 80% of salary supers are history for the newly employed. (There may be some defined contribution schemes left but not defined benefits schemes)
 
One of life's little moments this morning in the garden.As is usual in my brief stays at home I was out weeding.Pulling up a large plant I uncovered an ant's nest and they weren't pleased.Some of the flying variety.Within a couple of minutes a willie wagtail appeared and enjoyed the buffet.the ants soon disappeared but it stayed on following me and getting a few insects as I disturbed them.It then flew off.
I was just about to go back inside when I heard this sharp call.There about 6 inches away was the willie wagtail and I had to do another 15 minutes gardening.

I was on a defined benefit super scheme for the first 15 years of my working life (large mining company). Didn't appreciate how good it was until I went looking for new super when I started my new job. "What do you mean - the value can go down??!! That's rubbish! The old one only ever went up!!. Crooks!!! " :mad:

I also remember being incredibly amazed when I started my first job when I found out I got paid MORE for going on holidays. :eek: :confused: (The old annual leave loading.) That only lasted a few years, IIRC.
 
On the topic of Super.

As a small business we used to be able to pay our Employees Super by BPaying into their nominated Super Fund Account. Funds were received the next day. Then the ATO in their wisdom a couple of years ago introduced the Small Business Clearing House and all Super Fund payments had to go through an authorised Super Clearance House; we selected the ATO Clearing House figuring they would get it right. For a bit they did, although this delayed funds being received into People's super accounts for about 5 days. This month the ATO 'enhanced' the process and we now have to use the business portal (this is where BAS statements etc are processed) The SBSCH went offline for a few days while all our details were transferred over. So I have just done our first quarter return and paid the money on 3rd April. Funds still have not been entered to people's super accounts; and a system error has been reported on the ATO website. It will be at least the 20th April. Damn annoying. They get to keep the money while employees lose out. Was so mad I just sent a message to Scott Morrison. Bloody interfering Governments. Their SBSH DOES NOT guarantee that wayward employers pay their Super obligations but makes life much more difficult for those companies that do comply. Not happy Jan.
