Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The IT issue affecting BorderForce at SYD T1&2 has been resolved. However it will take some time to work through the backlogged

A travelling friend reported no delay in T1 Int in the last half hour. They were prepared for the worst but saw no abnormal queues and if anything it was quieter and more efficient than usual.

May well be correct.

QF11, the 1130 hours SYD - LAX is expected to depart at 1200 'high noon.'

QF29, the 0940 hours MEL - HKG pushed back at 1107 with suggested arrival having become 1730 hours, 75 minutes late.

As discussed last night, due to the very late arrival of QF94 in MEL this morning, LAX-bound QF93 is estimated to depart 135 late at 1330 this afternoon. QF94 is not arriving until 1159 hours this morning so my guess is that 1330 is a tad optimistic.

The 0940 hours BNE - HKG QF97 is delayed 80 minutes in predicted departure. 0955 hours BNE - NRT is expected to commence its journey at 1100 with arrival 60km from Tokyo set down for about 1850 tonight local time, 50 late. Most unusual for this latter flight to be delayed.

QF73 this late afternoon is forecast to depart 50 late at 1845 but to only be five minutes late arriving in SFO same day.

Have to agree. Passed through this afternoon having allowed a margin. Paused. Considered. Reversed tracks and put in an hour in the Qantas lounge before returning. Smoother than usual.

It proved impossible for QF to meet the '1330 hours' departure of QF93 as I had suggested above: pushback was at 1402 in MEL on Friday 9 March. Suggested same day LAX arrival is 0835 hours, two hours late.

QF5 (1645 hours SYD - SIN) departed at 1648 as VH-QPB, the A333 from QF24 that arrived almost 10 hours late at 1718 this afternoon is on one of our AFFer's QF3 at 2100 tonight.

QF27,. the B744 from SYD to SCL departed 77 late at 1407 with same day arrival predicted as 1202 hours, 52 minutes late.

'The 73' had beren forecast to be 50 minutes late away but this became a pushing back at 1901, 66 late. SFO arrival (ex SYD) is estimated at 1244, only 19 late.

Thursday 8 March 2018's QF12 left LAX 25 minutes behind schedule at 2255; Saturday 10 arrival in SYD is likely at 0900, half an hour behind.

The LAX - BNE QF16 departed pretty punctually at 2329 hours (nine minutes late) but arrival is not expected until 0814, 59 late. Looks like B744 VH-OJT did not take off until 0029 on Friday 9, an hour after pushback. A long time to be sitting in a queue or taxiing. This B744 flight will have been more than 45 minutes late arriving on five of the last seven mornings if we include Saturday.

eminere, many thanks: it pushed back at 2121 and took off at 2134. Aircraft is A333 VH-QPB. It had arrived more or less on time as QF108 from PEK at 1418 hours mid afternoon, so goodness knows why it was so delayed. That QF had to use an aircraft that did not arrive in SYD until almost mid afternoon tells me something else had gone wrong earlier in the day.

QF23 looks to be arriving BKK at 0135 hours on Friday 9 so departrure of QF24 should be able to occur at about 0250 or a bit later, assuming no further untoward events and cooperative passengers. SYD arrival tomorrow afternoon may be at approximately 1620, which would be 530 minutes late (although QF is pitching for an 0240 hours departure and a 1605 hours arrival.) Most of the day gone for intrepid travellers.

Allegedly QF23 on 8th March was delayed due to Hydraulic issues.
Another forum I frequent had a passenger on there who was on this flight and this is what he was told.

The LAX - BNE QF16 departed pretty punctually at 2329 hours (nine minutes late) but arrival is not expected until 0814, 59 late
There some pretty strong winds over the Pacific last night - This would have slowed QF16 immensely.

At one stage on QF95 I saw a ground (ocean?) speed of 1180Kmh.

In a pre landing speech the pilot apogolised for the many bumps overnight and said at one stage the tail winds were over 350Kmh.

Poor old QF23 - that was around 10 hours late two days ago - is on Saturday 10 March 2018 expected to depart at 1425 hours mid afternoon instead of 1030, so 235 minutes late.

One would never have been able to say this a couple of years ago when this and its return working QF24 were pretty darn good in running on time, but today a racehorse trainer might decide it was a 'horse worthy of shooting.' A bit of poetic licence but unfortunately this flight has become quite unreliable, and way less timely than its major nonstop rival TG. As an aside, TG does not seem to advertise much nor feature often on the major online third party booking sites: I can recall say 25 years ago when it was a 'top of mind' option for many Europe-bound travellers.

The reason QF23 is so often late will be unlikely to be just one cause. In the back of my mind is whether QF, if faced with a 'choice' of which flight to delay "chooses" QF23 because it has a greater percentage of lower yielding leisure passengers than some other flights departing mid to late morning. Then again, it receives the A333 most days whereas some other Asia-bound flights such as QF19 to MNL and QF5 to SIN are usually A332s.

QF5 from SYD to SIN, the 1645 hours looks to be cancelled today according to Google and FR24 but the QF website does not show it so was it scheduled? It was also cancelled on 6 and 7 March 2018.

Their first duty is to maintain safety but nonetheless a great way to placate passengers. Informative.

QF96 'in the other direction' (i.e. against the winds) is arriving in MEL at 1041 this morning (Saturday 10 March) with VH-ZNA the B789, so presumably it was battling the winds also.

350kmh sounds a lot but I'll leave discussion on that to those qualified to chat about jetstreams.

QF12 is in JFK with a 3.5 hour delay. Not expected into LAX until after midnight.

QF16 will be be badly delayed although this is not showing yet. QF 12 and QF 96 could also be held for connecting pax.

QF usually does not show such further delays until the flight "causing" the delay is at cruising altitude. This seems silly as like Flyerqf, many of us can work out (in this case) that if QF12 is delayed, QF16 will also be.

I agree with use 'could' re 'the 12' and 'the 96' ex LAX as there is no hard and fast rule. Seems to depend on extent of delay, whether there are spare seats on each flight and if so how many (and perhaps in what classes, although others can always be upgraded) but overall objective probably to minimise annoyance and delay to passengers (and expense to the airline) so absolute last option is to pop passengers overnight in a Los Angeles hotel.

QF29 was again late on Saturday 10 March, departing MEL at 1121, 96 minutes behind time, with expected HKG arrival at 1735, 80 minutes down. The plane is A333 VH-QPH that arrived in MEL this morning as QF80 from NRT at 0929, 29 late. Even if 'the 80' had been right on time it could not have formed a to-the-minute punctual QF29.

Earlier, the Friday 9 March QF24 (BKK - SYD) departed 343 minutes late at 2343 with Saturday 10 arrival at 1316 hours, 346 late. VH-EBG was the aircraft, probably having substituted for the usual A333 at the last minute yesterday on QF23.

any idea why QF171 was delayed today so therefore QF172 is going to be late and I'll miss my connection to ADL

VPS, this may not answer the gist of your question but this is the second consecutive day that B738 ZK-ZQF has operated QF171.

It looks like on Friday 9 March it was meant to operate QF151, the scheduled redeye at 2335 hours from MEl overnight to WLG where arrival should be at 0510 hours today. However that was cancelled.

This may have meant the crew needed to rest for the minimum number of hours which would be past 0930 this morning.

The 0930 hours QF171 did not take off until 1218 this arvo so WLG arrival is likely at 1748, 168 minutes late.

I've not looked up historical weather for Wellingtron but as you will be acutely aware today is benign though hardly warm at 17C.

QF suggests QF172 will depart from WLG at 1825 early this evening, 85 late and arrive MEL at 2035, 90 late. You won't make QF701, the 2020 hours MEL - ADL or even VA249, the 2040 hours. Fight for an hotel and please advise us as to which one QF gives you, transfer time that it takes and meal vouchers amount or other things.
