From Los Angeles to Sydney in Economy return on Qantas, now 63,000 Qantas Points (was 90,000 Qantas Points) plus US$834 taxes, fees and carrier charges

Pretty sure you can get a return flight for less than US$834 without using points most of the time. A quick look at May/June shows as low as $US730 on other airlines.

Also, I just did a trial booking MEL-LHR return (May/June, QF9 & QF10) and it only gave the 30% discount on the outbound leg. 42,000 + 60,000 for 102,000 total. Be careful!

imo economy classic rewards are generally a waste of points. Would much rather use them for J/F.

These offers don't change the needle that much.

Though if I was buying for a whole family then it would be a different situation.

The only time I've used these offers is on short domestic flights that are normally very expensive. E.g. CBR-BNE or MQL-xMEL-CBR which are only 5,600 points on special.

Now would be a very good time to book a trip to Lord Howe Island (if you can find availability). 11,200 points + $169 round-trip is an absolute bargain!!

Of course, the BIG difference between such promotions when comparing QF and VA is that VA don't have fuel fines.

So, that QF MEL-LAX redemption in economy costs under this promotion 31,500 point and AU$250. With VA the same route was something like 31,400 points and AU$34.

The 30% discount on points is nice but Qantas taxes are ludicrous.

SYD-BNE for 5,600 points + ~$38 is not worthwhile on a $174 airfare?

Need some thought.

In your SYD-BNE example, surely it makes sense to use points? You're getting 2.4 cents worth of value from each point - that's up there with some of the better redemptions, especially for economy.

I guess it depends whether you're points-rich or points-poor though. If you were saving the points for a J award you might buy a ticket.

I'm a points horder and have enough for 8 Oneworld awards but not quite ready to go. Don't see any point in saving more than I need so I'd like to spend the rest of the points as I earn them.

Business awards x 3 are a lot of points for very little gain.

Domestic flight redemptions can be made entirely with points, they shouldn't cost you anything - so when there is a sale you can gett he flig

Domestic flight redemptions can be made entirely with points, no cash component necessary - so when there is an offer like this you can usually get the seat + the taxes, for the same # points as usually gets you just the seat.

. . .

That's a shocking marketing fail on Qantas's part. Who in their right mind would highlight such extorionate taxes?

I'm afraid this is only the case for Points+Pay bookings which are generally poor value and are not included in this promotion. This promo is for Classic Flight Reward bookings.

At least it's accurate! o_O

Wondering when this changed? I've only ever done classic reward bookings and never paid any cash component, except on international fares.

Perhaps you're thinking of Virgin? They do let you pay the taxes using points.

No definitely was on Qantas, i've never had enough virgin points to claim any freebies, did do quite a few Ansett ones back in the day.

Edited to say: My colleague just said it changed when they started heavily promoting any Seat Rewards and Points + Pay options. Its been about 3 years since i did a domestic classic rewards claim.

A superb idea but do be wary of accommodation prices, however. In the peak season rooms can be hard to come by and aren't much of a bargain.

Your example shows very good use of points. The value of QF point is about 1c so you are practically paying $94 for this flight, saving $80.

I do value SC earn so my rule for golden triangle flights: if price > $150 use Avios or QF points on promo. The exeption to this rule will be MEL-BNE where I’ll start using points when price > $200.
