What fares are comfort seats (QF & VA) available on? Can you buy comfort seats on a sale or discount fare?

I believe any fare, although it'd be a bit of a waste in PE, J or F.

Cost for a comfort seat booking (1 PAX) is $fare times 2 & $taxes/levies/surcharges (times 1).

If you book a flexible economy fare then 2 x Flexi SC's are earned.

Correct. Any fare. (The comfort seat is sold at the same fare as the passenger's.)

Comfort seats can serve a variety of purposes including the accommodation of large size cabin baggage (such as a musical instrument). So it might be applicable in limited circumstances to pax also flying in premium cabins.

Thanks for the replies. Do you know if the comfort seat could be bought on a sale fare or gain DSC's under such a promotion?

The comfort seat is bought at the same fare as the passenger's original fare. So if it is a sale, the comfort seat is also a sale. Dunno about DSC's, someone with direct experience may have the answer.

OK, thanks. So I 'd assume in the case of QF, that a comfort seat could also be bought through the business portal. May be a good option for acquiring extra SC's rather than flying a status run and flex plus a comfort seat may represent better value than J (given Dom J is not much better than Y with WP)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Comfort seats can only be purchased through the call centre. They have to be processed manually. Ideally you will want to book the original and comfort at the same time. Adding a comfort seat later causes all sorts of issues.

So another silly question, can one buy a comfort seat on a QF ticket, but JQ metal?

Well, I Just rang to check. JQ don't do comfort seats.

Do you need to justify why you want the comfort seat? I read recently about someone booking a comfort seat domestic airline in the USA (forget which one) and the gate attendant assessed he was not large enough to warrant an extra seat and revoked it, without initially offering a refund!!

Probably no need to justify with Qantas - There's one member here I know that has a thin build with slightly above average height who attained WP (at least) primarily by use of Comfort seats.

That exact thing happened to me on a flight from SFO to LAX on Southwest.

I only purchased the comfort seats because the airfare dropped and I had received a credit that I had no other use for.

But as far as the agent was concerned, It was a paid for additional seat which they revoked without any compensation for the amount paid.

The only perk I was begrudgingly offered was a pre-boarding pass so I could get first pick of the seats.

I never bothered to chase it up with Southwest, but glad I didn't actually pay real money for it.

That doesn't happen with Qantas. The seat is locked and paid, tied to the original seat (you can't book them independently). If you try and bump the comfort seat you have to bump the original passenger as well.

I just had a look at Soutwest's policy for comfort seats. COS have two options, you can either book an extra seat during the booking process, OR, you can turn up at the airport and they will give you an extra seat if warranted. Booking in advance allows Southwest to plan their inventory. In either case, a COS requiring two seats is accommodated and if paid in advance, the extra seat price is refunded. Even if the flight is full or oversold.

So the examples of Southwest taking away the comfort seat make sense. It is always Southwest's seat, and ultimately a COS will never pay for that seat. If they have paid, they write in after the flight for a refund. If they haven't paid they get it for free at the airport.

So in your case where it was revoked, you simply apply after the flight for a refund.

Despite what's in Southwests terms and conditions, the gate agent flatly told me that I am unable to claim any compensation for the money paid for the comfort seat, as I was not large enough to warrant an additional seat and should not have purchased one to begin with.

The flight was not full. There was no capacity reason not to provide me with the comfort seat I purchased.

Like I said in the original post I didn't bother to chase it up with Southwest customer service after returning home. I didn't bother because I would not have been able to use the credit before the 1 year expiry, making it not worth the effort.

This does not apply to Qantas, and I was just replying to confirm JO145's comment about paid for comfort seats being denied at the gate in the U.S.A.

I think the nuance is that purchased comfort seats don't exist for Southwest. So even if the plane wasn't full, you aren't entitled to a spare seat beside you because you haven't paid for it (see below, it's actually prohibited)

Although looking at Southwest's terms and conditions it might be that they consider the purchase of an extra seat for comfort as being in breach of their terms and conditions and therefore ineligible for a refund?

From part 4: Ticketing: clause (3) (my bolding)

Purchase of Additional Seat. The purchase of more than one seat for use by a single Passenger is required when necessary to transport large musical instruments or electronic audio/video, medical, or otherwise sensitive equipment unsuitable for Carriage as Checked Baggage, as specified in Section 7.

It is the Passenger’s responsibility to notify Carrier of any unique seating needs. In accordance with Section 6, Carrier may refuse to transport individuals who are unable or unwilling to comply with Carrier’s seating requirements. Purchase of more than one seat for use by a single Passenger for the sole purpose of ensuring additional personal space is prohibited, except in limited circumstances when the Carrier, in its discretion, permits it.
