Malaysia Is Closing Their Lounges At KLIA For Several Months - One Mile at a Time

Up until earlier this month, Malaysia’s regional lounge was closed for refurbishment. It has now reopened, and based on what I’ve heard the changes are fairly minimal. What I didn’t realize is that they’re now also closing their lounges in the satellite terminal, which are their biggest lounges serving the most passengers.

The Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge in the KLIA satellite terminal will be closed for renovation through January 29, 2018. Given the constant delays there are with airport work, I’d be surprised if that work is completed as scheduled, so personally I wouldn’t bet on it reopening as scheduled.

Malaysia Airlines outlines the three lounge options that passengers have in the interim:

The only real “accommodation” here is access to the Malaysia Airports CIP Lounge (which isn’t nice). That’s because Malaysia passengers always had access to the Malaysia Regional Lounge, and also always had access to the Cathay Pacific Lounge due to both airlines belonging to oneworld.

While Malaysia Airlines’ First Class Lounge wasn’t all that great, at least it was typically quiet, so access to it was a nice perk for oneworld Emerald members (Malaysia doesn’t have many actual first class passengers, given that they only offer the product on the A380, and soon the A350).

If you’re flying Malaysia over the coming months, I’d do everything in your power to minimize the time you spend in the lounges. I expect the lounge options available to passengers will be way overcrowded, given just how many people Malaysia’s satellite lounge usually serves.

Here’s to hoping that Malaysia Airlines at least takes the opportunity to do a good job refurbishing their lounges. The Malaysia First Class Lounge has potential, though up until now Malaysia hasn’t done anything with it. I’d love to see the lounge offer improved a la carte dining, nap rooms that seem less like prison cells, and a general refresh of the design.

Very much needed
The business class lounge in particular was showing its age, and the number of steps, ramps and changes in level was ridiculous.

The CX lounge is nice enough albeit might get very busy if too many people head that way

May have to flash the Diners card and sample the Plaza Premium lounge which apparently is quite OK.

I haven't been in there for two or three years but recall it being sightly better than the Golden Lounge. Decent food and not busy.

Stupid me didn't even realise there was a CX lounge. I'll have to check it out in future.

Has this lounge been closed more than it has been open? Was closed for a long period about 5yrs ago also.

And yep, few trips to KL may eventuate in this period..typical.

.

Well here I am in the Plaza Premium lounge at KUL satellite, and it is indeed quite nice; was pretty quiet when I arrived round 6am but has filled up a lot since then, is now about 3/4 full. Definitely worth a try if you have PP or Diners. My ongoing flight (MH72) has been delayed so I may go over to the main terminal and check out the "regional" lounge.

(edited to add)

..and here I am in the "Regional" lounge in the main terminal, which I must say has improved greatly since the last time I was here ~5(?) years ago. The food offerings are extensive and the facilities gemnerally are good; was able to get a shower despite the lounge being pretty busy. There is a cordonned-off Platinum/Emerald section which seats about 20 and currently has just 2 of us in it! Given the relative ease of terminal transfer, this looks like your best bet for now.

Malaysia Airlines pushes back Golden Lounges re-opening to March - Australian Business Traveller

DavidFlynn said:
Malaysia Airlines has once again delayed the debut of its flagship first class and business class Golden Lounges at Kuala Lumpur.

The Oneworld member last week published an opening date of February 20 for both lounges, which have been closed for a major make-over since October 2017.

However, that date came and went with the hoardings still in place.

A spokesman for Malaysia Airlines has today advised Australian Business Traveller that "the customer experience team have confirmed soft reopening to occur March 2," which will be followed by an official ribbon-cutting event on March 12.

Snuck my head into the lounge this week for a sneak peek.

Can't wait for the grand opening... looks really nice.

Looks like I'm going to be a few days early passing through KUL on 28 Feb and 01 Mar. :(

Still, will report if it is open.

Rah! Rah! :p

LOL.

I am expecting great things when I make a brief visit to the lounge in late March. :)

To be fair, after experiencing a few teething problems MH has become my first choice for trips into Asia - the hard product is not too shabby and the price is more than competitive. The TP earn on BA is mighty fine too. MEL-KUL-PVG-KUL-MEL = 560 TP's in J. :)

........and don't forget the satay sticks!!!

Am currently in the regional Golden Lounge. Seen better. Not much to drink, either very bitter tonic water, various fruit waters or plain warm water. Glad I'm not looking for alcohol.

I would be even more impressed if they made me OWE!

I would be impressed too ;)

New lounge opens today. PM me your flight details and maybe my flights sync up with yours...

I was in the J lounge this week and noticed people coming over from the F side through a security door to collect food from the buffet. I’d be interested to know what was happening there.
