Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Thanks to a heads up from Steady earlier this month we were able to attend Moss Wood's tasting last Friday. The best cellar door tasting I have ever been to.

I have been buying a little off them for a couple of years, and I frequently get emails about their events. Unfortunately I have not been able to go to any yet - I'm glad to hear you made it, and a bit jealous I missed out again.

I'd have to say Margaret River too. For me, there's an elegance and purity for the crazy good MR ones, that the (more earthy styled) crazy good Coonawarra ones just miss out on. But I still love a Coonawarra Cab Sauv.
So eloquently described Wozza, one that MR fans would readily concur. Something to do with female winemakers per chance?

Pure satisfaction! That's what you get.

Dark with (ageing) burgundy edges. Lifted, heady sublime nose. Medium-bodied, but concentrated. It's perfectly balanced and has a fine lingering finish. It's beautifully nuanced on the nose and palate. With blackberry, liquorice, sage, tar, praline, and black pepper all there, in finely balanced measure.

It's just goes to prove - great value can be found in the Penfolds range. A 6 pack of the Bin 28 should be purchased by any serious Shiraz fan. And then opened in the 6 - 16 year window. Drink until 2020. A very satisfied Wozza 94.5/100 (4.1/5.0) from me.

I don't usually up my score. But as you can tell on night 3, I've really enjoyed this 10 year old Bin 28:

It got even smoother. It was so well made. It's why I'm going to bump it up to a Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me.
 
Haven't posted for a while, so here's a few randoms from the past week...

Mount Pleasant Rosehill Vineyard 2009:
An immense wine for Hunter, with big cherries, plums and dark fruit still in abundance, against a backdrop of grippy tannins and a long, long lingering finish of savoury spice and dry earthy notes. This is nice but still young. Really enjoyed this. CT91

Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon 2000
Cab Sauv with small additions of merlot, cab franc and petit Verdot. From Coal River this is probably the coldest climate Cab in Australia. Spends 36 months in oak and years before release. This is the Cab that just keeps on giving. There's still the cassis on the nose. But the taste is an immensely complex mix of ripe dark fruit, cedar, sage, thyme and bitter chocolate. CT93

Hardys Eileen Hardy Chardonnay 2008
Pale straw colour. Peaches, grapefruit and vanillin and faint spiced oak on the nose. The taste is rich peach, toasty oak, some cashew notes with a long finish. All in great balance IMHO. CT93

Seppelt Port Barossa Qualco Mataro Shiraz 1973

Amazing fruitcake nose, with a taste of raisins, orange peel, brandy and spice. This is great. CT93

A lovely example of a Barringwood Park Mill Block Pinot. Bright cherry, red current, balanced acidity, medium tannin, a hint of cream with a reasonable length. It is a lot lighter in body than the '12 and '13 Mill Blocks. Only 1 left :(

Quite Friday night with Pizza and John Duval Entity Shiraz 2005 - Great nose of smokey marshmallow, med to full bodied,more elegance than bruiser. Subtle mint and tobacco notes on solid black fruits. Long finish with smooth tannin and lovely oak. Won't get any better.

2004 Abednego here. Just teased the cork out without calamity and am sitting down with it in front of the cricket, with both kids in bed. Happy days however the wine turns out :)

Lovely. Tannins are quite forte, probably should decant and leave for a few hours. Then pigs might fly...

I might leave it for a while, while this is burnt on the BBQ...

It's just a Coles marinated butterfly lamb, but quite yum, especially with duck fat potatoes and Greek salad. (Yes I know I should be drinking a Cabernet, but, hey, this is Brisbane after all!)
