Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

So 8 years for the Wendouree as well DrR? Or are they 'not most reds'?

At least 8 years on Wendouree. I've got some Wendouree from the 1980's that will be drunk in the next month. Really looking forward to those.

And for me its 8 years on most other reds, unless its a variety (eg pinot) that is usually drink young. But I tend not to purchase those as I just wont be able to get to them in time.

Last nights effort, the WOTN going to the Limestone Ridge Shiraz Cabernet 2002 - Drinking superbly, unfortunately my last of the vintage.
All were good, albeit different styles, the Houghton needs another 5 years to mellow, the McLean drinking well but preferred the 2012 from last week.

I was fortunate way back in the 80's to drink a 1976 vintage Limestone Ridge in Battery Point Tasmania and the memory still lingers, absolutely magical wine....

Also had a Isole e Olena last night - 1997 Cepparello. Been keen to open it for a while so glad to have a reason. It didn't disappoint - lots of fruit, medium body, smooth and a long finish, with some herbs and spices coming through. Very little sediment and the cork held up well (my first use of the Ah-So - great investment).
The artichokes are from the garden and I thought went nicely with the Italian theme!

Those artichokes look delicious!

Had my first Blue Poles Allouran on the weekend, I thoroughly enjoyed it. A really nice nose on opening, a smooth balance of fruit, acid and tannin with a long finish. Picked up from VM following positive comments on AFF, and really glad I did.

One of those was looking at me in the cellar last night, I looked back at it and hissed "Not yet!".
I opened an $18 2010 Balnaves The Blend instead, which had not budged an inch in 5 years.

I'm still living vicariously through Dr Ralph's cellar! This time, I have the privilege of trying:

the Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

IMG_7876.JPG
I'm thinking I may have underscored this one from my notes below. So I'll be revisiting this tomorrow and Wednesday nights:

2006 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra - CellarTracker

"Arguably Australia's most important Cab Sauv. Halliday said it was a 'serious wine' with 'considerable tannin-derived structure that has an earthy/savoury regional profile' when giving 95 points (a big Halliday score back then).

It's now reddy/brown, showing those 10 years in the bottle. Lovely blueberry and spice nose. The medium-bodied palate is perfectly formed; and nicely rounded and warm in the mouth. With blackberry, blueberry, mint, earth, tar, sage and black pepper leading the way. There's a strong wave of dark fruit, mint, earth and spice mid-palate, and a fine oak-spiced finish.

In its prime now. With at least another 5 years in the tank. Great vintage. Hence a Wozza 94.5/100 (4.1/5.0) from me.
"

Now, here's a thought: Margaret River or Coonawarra for your Cab Sauv's? Tough Beefarmer style question for this fine Spring evening in Sydney...

MR for Steady

Coonawarra for me.

MR for me, but I think I'm biased after my trip there..

Forced to decide, I would take the Margies.
Great question for us all Wozza.

Have to concur with BF and ste on this one, Margaret River by a narrow margin....

I'd have to say Margaret River too. For me, there's an elegance and purity for the crazy good MR ones, that the (more earthy styled) crazy good Coonawarra ones just miss out on. But I still love a Coonawarra Cab Sauv.

Thanks to a heads up from Steady earlier this month we were able to attend Moss Wood's tasting last Friday. As well as the current releases they also had some 2006 vintages to compare.

I had a long talk with their winemaker who wanted the 2006 wines to show that Moss Wood wines were made to reward cellaring.

He is spot on. Their 2006 Semillon is now a light golden colour and has all those wonderful flavours of aged Semillon. It will last for many more years.

Prior to last Friday I would have said Coonawarra was my favourite area for Cab Sauv. but having tasted the 2006 Moss Wood I may have to rethink that. What a great wine. A perfect example of what a well made and well cellared wine should be. This wine will also last for many more years.

The best cellar door tasting I have ever been to.

Thanks Steady
