Currently you can check in from 7 days before the fli8ght and avoid the seat selection fee. This is beaing reduced to 4 days.

... Ryanair is making life tougher for passengers who choose not to pay extra for assigned seating.
The airline, which is Europe’s biggest no-frills carrier, has told passengers paying only the basic fare that, from next month, the window for checking in online for free is shrinking from a week to four days.
The move will infuriate passengers who are happy to have their seats allocated randomly, avoiding the charge. ...

someone needs to create a step-by-step guide on how to avoid as many of these fees at possible, maybe even an app with reminders!

European travel is in a race to the bottom, it was once compared to catching a bus, but it seems far more complicated now. Full fare airlines can be cheaper then the low cost airlines. The manoeuvres by these airlines have been aggressive though, in some areas Ryanair has moved in, undercut the competition and then realised that they can't make as much money as they wanted, so reduced the schedules and effectively deteriorated the availability of travel to some of the regional airports. In some cases they have then pulled out altogether. They also bully the local councils and airports that they operate into. Ryanair also have some very dodgy employment and HR practices.

Two weeks ago I flew Ryan Air from LGW to DUB. It cost £14.95. I paid no additional fees. Other carriers were significantly more. The service was fine. What do you need on an hour long flight

Very good points, YSSY, although you may have meant 'European AIR travel is in a race to the bottom...'

All the more reason to patronise the still (in many cases) excellent various European railways. Unfortunately there are not as many overnight sleeping car trains as was the case a few years ago, but there are a huge number of day trains.

Why fly from one far flung secondary airport to another when one can go CBD to CBD on a train and observe interesting scenery instead of just clouds along the way, have a meal or a snack in the dining car or buffet that's on the train and move about as one never can on a cramped aircraft?

Sorry, yes absolutely correct. I also have travelled extensively in Europe by train and loved it. I don't particularly like driving so good public transport makes life much more pleasant.

Very true. I am happy to use Ryanair when the airports and schedules are convenient to me, but I always buy a seat with priority boarding, as it guarantees your carry on won't put in the hold (a nasty Ryanair trick).
