No details, simply "coming soon" for daily MEL-CBR flights. Media event today.

Hopefully will keep QF a bit more honest!
Cue VA cutting a few flights no doubt.

I don't normally care if Tiger is flying a route or not, but their entry to the CBR-MEL market is most welcome from my point of view! The QF/VA monopoly has meant airfares on this route, for a ~40 minute flight, have been ridiculously high. I'm sure a lot of Canberrans (including some of my friends & family) will be cheering.

Even if you don't fly Tiger, one can only hope that this puts some pressure on QF to drop fares to at least "normal" levels.

Well I certainly am. Anything that provides a bit of competition for Qantas must be a good thing. Hopefully the Tiger fares wont be too ridiculous and the schedules won't be too bad.

I notice there are various booking fees. But, if paying via paypal it can be put on an Amex linked card: Payments made using PayPal will be charged a booking and service fee of $4 per flight per person.

Payment T&Cs:
Fares are quoted per adult in AUD and include GST and fees except for the booking and service fee of $8.50 which is charged per flight per person for payment by credit card and debit cards. The fee does not apply to an Australian issued MasterCard debit card. Payments made using PayPal will be charged a booking and service fee of $4 per flight per person. Payments made using Interest Free (issued by Latitude Financial Services) will be charged a booking and service fee of $10 per booking. Additional charges apply for optional extras such as checked-in baggage, travel insurance and reserved seat selection, which are available for purchase. Refer to the booking summary at the top of each page to check the inclusions and prices as you book.

The Tiger website currently says that fares on the CBR route go on sale at 11am AEST today (ie; just under an hour from now) and that the first 200 bookings will get a refund of the fare component.

I don't care at all  if Tiger flies a route or not, but it is good for the public overall if they are.

Looks promising!

Flights will commence on 8 December 2016, with times as follows:

Mon/Tue/Wed/Sat:
MEL 10:30 - CBR 11:35
CBR 12:05 - 13:15

Thur/Fri/Sun:
MEL 17:35 - CBR 18:40
CBR 19:10 - MEL 20:20

I wonder if it's a coincidence that MEL is the only destination ex CBR that's on sale today?

Finally competition has returned to Canberra. Three cheers to Chief Minister Andrew Barr for making things happen.

It will possibly mean less Virgin flights into Canberra though remembering Virgin's stake in Tiger.

If so, more strange business decisions.

Because of the nature of the Canberra market, highest household income and all that stuff, I think Virgin knows it would have spend a motza to try and get QF passengers off Melbourne and Sydney flights out of Canberra. So I'm wondering if they are going to go for the bottom end and soak up people who can't and wont pay the QF fares.

It will have some minor repercussions for the APS. No longer will meetings finish in MEL about 1600 on a Thur/Fri.

Be interesting to hear how they avoid Tiger with BFOD.

And if their costs are truly lower on tiger, they may make more money even if the fares are lower to the consumer.

Agree, I'd hazzard a guess as well that QF add a slight premium because of the policies of employers and preferred carriers.
