I started putting mushrooms into my bolognaise sauce when I was 16 or 17 years old. Tasted great.

Still put mushrooms into my bolognaise sauce 35 years later and it still tastes great.

You can put what you like in it but don't call it bolognaise sauce.

I would have thought chopped mushrooms were a perfectly acceptable part of any bolognese sauce. Wikipedia may not be an acceptable academic reference but even so... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolognese_sauce
I wouldn't say lamb stew is disgusting, although I am not a massive fan.
OP's assessment of this offering - based on his attached image - seems reasonable.

Ah that explains a lot! Where do you get the Psilocybe cubensis these days? We used to get them in cow pats at farms at Samford in the '70s but now they are housing estates. ( Or maybe it was Copelandia cyanescens?)

Carrot (as part of a soffrito) is a part of many a traditional bolognese recipe, surely.
Yes absolutely. But mushroomes are not. Sure as a beef, pork stew fine, but you can't call it a Ragû Bolognese.

Just as you can't serve spaghetti with a Ragû Bolognese and call it Bolognese.

That was the only hot option available on the buffet? You'd think they'd put something else out there (the starch which accompanies that dish doesn't count). Even hot pastries, or even another stewed dish, like curry. Or even something lame-ish like chilli con carne.

I guess it'd be back to the sandwich toaster then (unless they only provide these in the domestic Business Lounges).

Maybe when they finally refresh the International Business Lounges in Australia (SYD and MEL obviously not high on the list), we'll see better fare being put out. That said and done, even in say the HKG lounge, the selection doesn't abound in a lot of hot food. When I was last in HKG, there were some nice braised or roasted chicken pieces, and I think a hot noodle dish. The rest of the main fare were salads, although I have to say these were very good salads (often are), and I'm not a health freak so if I say it's a good salad, you can take that to the bank. HKG also has some hot fare offered during select times of the day as plates or small serves on trolleys. I'm hoping the refurbishment of the International Business Lounge in BNE will bring about a similar catering scheme.

Nothing wrong with lamb stew, but that said it doesn't matter what it is, it has to taste good. Stews will never be easy to present appealingly in a buffet style setting. I often find a lot of buffet stews are underseasoned, especially the meat, so sometimes it's like you're eating wet styrofoam. Also, they go overboard in the proportions of potato : rest of the ingredients (especially the meat, although some people do tend to just pick up all the meat, leaving thin pickings for the next patrons).

P.S. you're not the most highest valued customer cohort, otherwise you'd be wiser and in the F Lounge :)

Or in the CL (Dom)via the private glass. Unfortunately being wiser does not improve Flounge eligibility.

The 'wiser' implication was a comical hint that one who has eligibility to the F Lounge (by virtue of status if not class of service) would look rather silly if they went to the J Lounge when the latter is clearly inferior.

Sadly, Pullman (Accor) do the catering the CL (Dom) too. Perhaps if QF stopped outsourcing to inferior suppliers (based on price, or the romantic relationships of their Customer Experience Head's) then we would all have better options irrespective of our status.

Actually scrap that. Being wiser can improve Flounge eligibility - AFF wiser that is!!

Dinner catering in Dom J lounges (east coast) has been disappointing for some time now.
Since island dining was discontinued the slop type dishes are way too common. Not much to eat anymore besides salad and cheese.

There is still a plate of the day in the SYD business lounge most thursday nights when I get there between 6:17 pm and 6:29 pm. Had a very nice anti pasto type dish with goat's cheese recently. Might not be called island dining, but the concept is similar.

My favourite hot dish is the red curry.

Yes, had cheese plate and an open Reuben sandwich there last night, very nice indeed.
Haven't seen these on offer in MEL recently.

Meh. You are both missing out. Witness the HBA QP's sandwich press. I guess they call that Neil Perry inspired "island" dining.

Well actually.;)
The Adelaide Qantas club has been all over the service thing. A few times they have served toasted sandwiches to the lounge via a waiter service type thing for the early flight. Haven't seen that for a while, but they still have someone with pre made coffees as you walk into the lounge at 5am.
It was so much more civilised for the lounge staff to make the toasties and serve them around. I thought it was a great idea, I hope no one got in trouble over my feedback to say so.

Plate of the day is back in BNE! Great way to start the day with my favourite eggs benny :)

As there is no Qantas club at BKK and i was flying JQ 30 BKK to MEL on 23 April, I was given a 'Louis' Tavern' voucher during my discounted Star class check in.

I approached the the reception at Louis' Tavern and enquired as to what i would need to get in and they said that if i was flying Jetstar i would need to be a platinum to gold to gain access. So it appears this lounge is a direct replacement for Qantas. Anyway i found the premise to be a good substitute for qantas in fact their food is much better that i get in qantas.

Re: Lounge food STEW AGAIN !

Sickening greetings in the business lounge at MEL international 12 April 2016.

Just my luck to be travelling when they were serving up this cheap cough again. Lamb stew, I complained to one of the staff (acknowledging that it was not her fault) asking her to pass on to management that i was not happy with it. I also asked her if she would eat it and she replied "No" turning up her nose.

No other hot choice and the place stunk of lamb stew. Seriously pissed off that someone hasn't rectified this since the last time i travelled using this lounge. Probably because there are so many people saying that its not that bad and they enjoy a good lamb stew. Well consider this Qantas, how wide spread is lamb stew on restaurants menus? it's not and for good reason, because it's not something people choose when given a choice.

Qantas sort yourself out and stop treating me this way, its a terrible way to start your flight experience.

Re: Lounge food STEW AGAIN !

That's terrible!

Maybe they knew you were flying JQ and wanted to set your expectations for the flight?

Re: Lounge food STEW AGAIN !

If it's for frequent flyers hence frequent users of the lounge, why is it always the same......
