Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Penfolds Release

So what do we think of the new Penfolds release today? I am tempted by the St Henri and 389, but not much else.

I was going to buy the St Peters today, but can only buy one of these three. Opinions from the floor - what would you choose...?

No doubt you are getting the squillion emails like I have - what's the cheapest? Is it Dan Murphys?

I think they are all too expensive.

I've got a stack of Penfolds and am happy to let them age gracefully.

I'd love some more, but I'm not prepared to pay top dollar, especially when I know I can wait and pick them up cheaper at some stage in the future.

Dan's had the 2012 389 down from $75 to $57 not that long ago - I grabbed a doz then less 15.5%. I missed the 2012 RWT when it was $105 cause I was in China and could not get onto Dan's web site past the GFW - so YES they will certainly be offered at substantially reduced prices in next few months - patience grasshopper!

I completely agree, and can understand your comment [especially when you have purchased a cellar full of goodies over the years - like your $12 389s from 1999]. Alas, I am just starting out on that same exercise, and you could say today's prices have somewhat inflated for the really good cellar-worthy stock (disregarding some of the excellent bargains we all speak about on these threads).

Dan and Kemeny's usually play tag on prices in 10c decrements for a week or so.
DM started at $62.60 for 389, now down to $58.50 (online offer), Kemeny's still $62.50.

I think if you want St Henri, Dan's price at $74.90 (last time I checked) is about as good as it will get. Add on the usual discounts too.

What a surprise! :)

Wozza: good luck finding the 2010 St Henri at any price (let alone release price) unless you bought in the couple of weeks after release. The 2012 doesn't have the same ratings, so I guess it'll be around/available for a while. Which one to choose - do you prefer Cab Sauv/Shiraz blend? Or straight shiraz? The St Henri comes in a wooden box if you like collecting those things :)

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Penfolds Release

With the price fluctuations of the 389 2012 in the past year, I don't see a reason to jump onboard right away unless you want to drink some soon. The price of St Henri on the other hand always seem to just move north.

What were the fluctuations of the 389?
I got some of the 2010,11 and 12 in the last year or so. From memory got them all in the mid $50 something range.

I long for the days of 2011 (was it?) when the price war broke out between DM and 1st choice and the prices of popular releases fell so low that Penfolds/Fosters/Treasury sent out their staff with corporate credit cards to buy back everything they could! I bought a lot that year...but should have bought more!

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Penfolds Release

Surprise surprise, 389 is now $57 at Dan's for >6 bottles.

T&Cs say otherwise. But if it works, good luck to ya!

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Penfolds Release

As soon as I sort out the details I'll put up an offer from a boutique Clare Valley vinyard that makes bespoke wines.
Only 2 wines will be available, Riesling in a 12 pack and Cabarnet in a 6 pack. Freight will be free anywhere in Oz.

I was invited to cross a bridge and try both of these wines yesterday (had several glases) and can tell you they are both top notch.
The Cab with 10 years cellaring potential was stunning IMHO.

A few clues are in this post so I wonder if anybody can work out the label.

Received my GB Meshach Shiraz.
The Courier said "You ring I bring" :)

Note: Jacobs Creek 2013 instead of 2012
Hardys 2014 instead of 2013

It's fine with me.

Arrived today for me - well at least 1 of the boxes did. One of the quickest DM deliveries I've had.

Still waiting on the Eden Valley CSM.

Yes Ralphy art that price just too difficult to say NO - so I bought 2 cases.

By my reckoning if purchased separately at prices listed on Dan's site cost would equate to $273.63 - so to buy this for $102.60 is an absolute steal!

Which one are we talking about here?

There's still plenty of great value wines out there. You just have to be patient and vigilant. Opportunities will come up and you need to jump as soon as you see them.

The best opportunity I had was to hear about a stash of aged Penfold that had been forgotten about in the basement of an old pub in rural NSW. A quick phone call and then 6 hours in the car saw me buy everything they had. They were happy to get rid of everything at once and I was happy to get some amazing bargains.

This was about 4 years ago and I remember getting aged RWT's (1990's) for under $40 and aged St Henri's (1990's again) for under $35.

Whilst there was some risk given I had no idea of the cellaring over the last few decades, it was worth the $1500 I shelled out for over 100 bottles.
