doesn't look like there's a single award seat available in any class on the SYD-YVR services? I checked three random dates (within the timetable for the flights) and all I get back is BA services via LHR.

Red Roo, can you advise of any plans to codeshare with Westjet from Vancouver. Would love to book Toronto-Vancouver-Sydney and avoid US customs!

Qantas .com is offering sale pricing via VYR 1299 each way with very good conx in Jul travel

It never rains but it pours. Picking random weeks on EF through May, June, July ... nothing for the first two months beyond LAX and DFW and then ... BINGO!! ... QF75 X9 for on Jul 11, 13, 16.

BD

The announcement linked to has * subject to regulatory approval for many routes, including YVR-YYZ, part of the second tranche of Westjet codeshares.

I went to the Qantas site and departing from YYR, it will not give YYZ as a destination, although it will give YYC as a destination; again YYC was part of the original, confirmed destinations for code-share.

Has regulatory approval been given for the second tranche of Canadian Westjet destinations?

You used to be directed to the Nth American Qantas site if you asked for destinations from and to the US, but I can't see that now (its probably there :) ) How would we book these internal Canadian routes (my TA did my recent one.)

Quick reading of the Westjet website, No true buisness / first class, but offer a "plus fare"

How does this sit with people.....

By luck, I'll have a trip to Whistler during this period, though I won't be able to book it for another month and a bit. What is the SC earn for the SYD-YVR flight? The points calculator doesn't let me choose Vancouver.

It was 160 in J. Less than to LAX. It is covered in thread ' more simpler and fairer' ( or something like that)

BTW, My TA told me today that the additional services aren't loaded into the GDS yet.

I think they are extra legroom seats at the front of the cabin, like AA economy plus seats. Might be worth it on a long sector.

Would a year-round SYD-HNL-YVR JQ flight work? I think it would be very attractive for people to 'thaw out' in HNL on the way home from skiing in Canada. If they offered a free overnight stop in HNL it would nicely break up the long LCC haul. It would make HNL into a mini hub for JQ and they could then consider HNL-SFO and perhaps even HNL-LAS?

I think SYD-YVR is a good move by QF. If the 789 is in QF's future, I think the route will prove popular and profitable.

OTOH, as a number of posters have mentioned, as value to the FF program, it fails. Well at least from PER.

Having just received the newest promo email, I did a little checking using flights out Mon 22 Jun PER-SYD-VYR return 29 Jun.
10900 points and 120 SC in Sale (N/O) class as a non-elite. All for $2617. perhaps $100 less on other days.

Since CX also has direct flights HKG-YVR, I checked their availability on the same days PER-HKG-YVR.
20260 miles in V class for $2277. 50% to QF so 10130 points and the same order of magnitude SCs (I didn't recalculate but PER-HKG is 25 each way).

Come on QF, the least you can do is provide (approximately) the same points and SC accrual as the LAX flights. I wonder why CX is doing so well exPER?

Happy wandering

Fred

Non-flexible J? That'd probably be 40 in Discount Economy then, 5 less than to LAX. Curious given it's 269 mi further!

On the surface of it, it is curious but when you delve deeper into the mind of the "Simpler and Fairer" mantra you seen realise that the 5 year olds who conceived it didn't know that YVR existed because QF didn't fly there at the time so they didn't include it in the "West Coast USA" bracket (I do realise it is technically West Coast Canada) and therefore by default it got lumped into the "Extra Long Haul International" bracket when it was introduced as a destination and therefore earns from that bracket.

Simpler for the monkeys who invented the system because they didn't need to consider future QF destinations and Fairer for QFF because it means you are less likely to achieve status so it costs them less.

Simpler or Fairer for you, the pax... nooo, certainly not but then that is what Simpler and Fairer is all about.

QED!!

Fairly sure YVR is WEST coast Canada (or at least it was last time I was there!)

In that other thread, serfty posted the relevant links.

First, the earn (in all classes) for "ultra long international flights" (look under 'Codeshare services' :( )and then the definition of that. Basically because they don't have Canada/YVR in their main definition, its lumped in with all other long range routes, notwithstanding, as you observe, its longer than and BNE and SYD to LAX.

One would HOPE (Red Roo, hint, hint ;) ) that with the firm re-establishment of this route, it will be formally defined in the 'Simpler and Fairer' ™ standard route definitions and earn like the LAX flights do.

Thought this may be of interest to some people. I came across these load factor statistics for the Qantas flights to Vancouver back in January.

The average load on the 6 QF75 SYD-YVR flights was 75.6%. On QF76 YVR-SYD, the average load factor was 93.2%. (This was compared to overall average load factors on QF services to the USA of 74.8%, and from the USA of 90.2%, for the entire month of January.)

Since QF are getting back into the Seasonal Flights game, how about a seasonal direct service to Sapporo in January. It's a pain to get to these days.
