Sydney to Vancouver in discount business (I), for a WP. How many SCs and points do you reckon?

Its a temporary route, so not in the Qantas points/SC calculator nor contemplated in their 'regions' under Simpler and Fairer (TM). But its almost the same as Australia east coast (eg MEL, SYD,BNE) to USA west coast (eg LAX), isn't it?

MEL-LAX 7,921 miles
SYD-LAX 7,488 miles
BNE-LAX 7,161 miles

SYD-YVR 7,757 miles Yes!

So, should get the same earn as those east coast Australia to west coast USA routes, eh? (Discount business is third column from the right)

...plus 9,000 points status bonus for 22,500 points.

Ha, ha! Sucker! Simpler and Fairer (TM) gave me:

Simpler and Fairer (TM) - pure horse manure, as we all know.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Typical of Simpler and Fairer... But at least you didn't pay for all those stupidly excessive fuel fines what with the oil price halving and all. Oh, hang on.

CNN Business Traveller had Randy Petersen from FT stating that if the airline wants to charge more for more SCs, don't do it. He says you are playing into the revenue based system Getting the most from frequent flier miles - CNN Video
Formerly of FT (he started it but sold out, he now runs Milepoint).

The USA is a changing landscape, and unfortunately, the rest of the world seems to be following suit on FF programs. AA have said outright they will not move to Revenue Based tiers in the 'near' future (but that of could mean until the US merger is complete, which is probably 12-24 months off).

Delta - Revenue Based
United - Revenue Based

There are of course exceptions for United if you're an elite that's not 'homed' in the USA, but it's the way forward. With flight yields in the USA at all time highs, they can afford to. I can count on two hands the number of flights i've taken on American that have had empty seats (out of hundreds) and on one hand the number of First cabins i've sat in with empty seats.

You have been credited with the earn for "Ultra-long international flights":

https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/terms#jump25

... which is under the heading "Codeshare Services" - as such this should only apply if this was a Qantas codeshare (on Qantas metal?!?)!

Maybe Qantas think you should count yourself lucky to have earned at all as there is no earn actually defined for between "East Coast Australia" and "West Coast [non USA] North America ".

[edit]
Actually, I have found another page where the 'codeshare' section heading has been expanded somewhat to:
All other Qantas and Jetstar flights including codeshare flights
Route Definitions - Frequent Flyer - Qantas

So there is indeed a definition for these flights and it would seem you have been correctly credited in the enhanced
Simpler and Fairer manner as only Qantas can do!

It was a regular QF flight QF75 on QF metal (trip report for comparison with AC service in prep). But yes, I'm sure that will be Qantas' reaction when I claim for the missing points/SCs:

(Hurt tone of voice). "We only thought we were being generous as you should have earned nothing - check the tables."

Seriously though, and actually thinking about it, the computer has probably seen SYD-YVR, had a WTF fit, shorted out a few valves, made some clunking noises and picked out the earn you quoted, with no human intervention.

More 'Simpler and Fairer' (TM)

I looked for that & couldn't find it - I thought it had been replaced by 'Simpler and Fairer (TM)' zones.

There are still distance based zones listed as a catch all. It's towards the bottom of a table somewhere but might only be for codeshares.

So Adelaide is east coast Australia and qantas flights on qantas metal are codeshares. Seems simple enough.

AFAIK Only Perth is excluded from "East Coast Australia" and only for the purpose of giving us fewer points and SCs for PER-DXB.

Perth is defined as west coast or north west coast. Strangely matching standard geographical norms. Adelaide on the other hand is defined as east coast in defiance of geographical orthodoxy.

Well "north west coast" doesn't match any geographical norms or realities. Perth is about as far north as Sydney.
