I just got my APIA home and contents renewal. I went on-line and did a direct comparison with the same company and conditions which came in around $500+ cheaper. I phoned them and said I'd like to renew for that price please.

They were like a broken record just kept saying that's a price for new customers. So, I asked, is there a penalty for loyalty? After a lot of repetition of new customers guff, they offered to take $200 off my renewal and I said I'd think about it.

So, now looking around for more quotes. APIA splits the excess on home and contents eg $1000 on the home and say $200 on the contents or whatever.

Allianz on-line has a flat rate of $500 excess for both.

Any latest findings or really good deals/points offers?

Is CANSTAR a reliable aggregate?

Can you cancel your policy, hang up and call back as a new customer?

I'll PM more info tomorrow but AusPost have an offer with 30% online discount and "family and Friends" $100 cashback.

It may or may not be cheaper.

Budget Direct have up to 35% off H & C insurance. I switched to them last month after being with the same company for 5+ years, and saved a couple of hundred. They have different excess amounts for each on the combined policy.

I think I have a referral link that they sent me when I signed up, if your interested.

Now why didn't I think of that, even just as an obvious answer to the phone agent. I can just do the quote, and cancel the original.

I don't have one of those.
Or take a new policy out in your partners name?

Yes, thanks would appreciate that.

I will test all of these options. Thanks, if you find the referral link.

I was with Budget Direct for a few years but they tried the same trick with offering a better deal to new customers than to me.
Changed to Woolworths Insurance a few months back - their website has various sliders to adjust the cover and excess and I saved over $100 by switching.
Coles also run a similar insurance offer. Just search for Woolworths Insurance and it will be be near the top of the search results. Current offer is 20% for combined house and contents but worth checking to see if there are other good offers around as well.

This would be my recommendation, if you can get the quote to finalise online as a "new" customer accept it and cancel your old.

Well, that would not work. It keeps saying "invalid state". I tried putting in the next door house number (mistake to be corrected later), but wouldn't allow it. Shame, as the new quote is $985 and the renewal is $1,664.0 (I did raise the excesses though). Any more ideas? ;)

I think I may be looking at a new insurer on line if anyone does have a recommendation or discount code please?

I found the referral, which is a code. Basically, if you take out house & contents or car insurance with the code, we will both received a $50 prepaid Visa Card.

The T&C's are here:-

https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/about-us/budget-direct-buddy-terms-and-conditions.html

So, if the quote from Budget is good and you want to purchase a policy with them, just let me know and I'll PM the code to you.

OK thanks, I'll try ringing the current insurer and see if they will match the online. Yesterday, they said they'd knock off a few hundred if I raised the excess, which I was happy to do.

Thanks, I'll do some more research, I've got a couple of weeks.

This may be worth trying, leaves me a bit out there on a limb for a few hours though. Anyone tried this? I wonder if there's any T&Cs / definition of 'new' business.

Dodo home and content insurance is cheep. Same underwriter as Australia post. Use a comparison website and you get a free basic security system. Not sure of the quality of the security system. Same 35% of for online application.

The underwriters for Budget Direct and Australia Post is Auto & General Insurance Company Limited. I find out a bit about them, as serfty and robd have used them.

Is this one of those that has limited companies subscribing, and maybe pay to be included?

Maybe they pay. I don't know.
I did find that via the compare website I got the same price as going online direct but got some extras. Ie gift voucher for car insurance and some type of security system for home and contents.

Went to the library, Choice magazine did home and contents insurance in April this year. They did not include Budget Direct or Australia Post, but Coles came in at the bottom of the list. Top of the list was ANZ H&C. No mention of the Budget and Aust Post underwriters, Auto & General Insurance Company Limited so it wasn't terribly helpful.
