A few weeks ago, MH launched MHupgrade, allowing passengers on eligible itineraries to bid for upgrades. Anecdotally, it appears most paid fares (other than those in the highest cabin already) are eligible for upgrades. I received email notification of this service for a booking made via MH, but not for a booking made through an online TA, but checked online at above link - and it indeed was eligible.

Anecdotally (on FT) it seems some relatively inexpensive upgrades are available.

Also, in case someone asks, upgrades book into I class - which is not eligible for miles/status accrual - but miles accrual from originally ticketed fare class should still apply.

The upgrade I bid for after getting this initial notification, came through for MEL-KUL last night, very happy as Y was rather full. The price I paid was slightly above the minimum bid allowed.

So after using 25k pts for the outbound upgrade, and MH Upgrade for 95pc of the return (I didn't bid for KUL-SIN!) certainly overall price paid for my J seats was much better price than any paid seat or paid mileage program redemption (US, Lifemiles etc) fares. Fingers crossed for my flight to MEL again next week.

Sounds good. Got bids in for some flights early next year. I'd be more than happy to put in a bid where the total cost, if successful, equals up to half the fare for a fully paid J fare. It makes the upgrade bids on VA a total rip-off.

I booked through a TA and just checked my eligibility... No go :( I'm going to try for an airport paid upgrade instead.

Oh, that's a shame. My first lot of flights were booked through expedia (.sg) and all 4 sectors were eligible, as is next weeks booking, made on MH website.

Got it for tonight again. Had to pay slightly more than last time. But if I am lucky and pay the same again for the return, total of airfare plus upgrade fee would be less than either SQ or QF Y fares when I booked.

Did you use the 5 digit MH PNR instead of the 6 digit one generated by your TA?

I used MH's 5 digit PNR... I think I'm not eligible because my flights to/from KUL are part of an itinerary with QR to IST. I have emailed them and asked if there's a way I could bid though. No response yet.

I think that's the reason right there.

What sectors and winning bid?

During Dec:
KUL-MEL (o/night) ... $290 SGD
MEL-KUL (pm)... $265 SGD

Also MEL-KUL fail early new year .... but flight was full in both Y & J (and 2 weeks out was J0 ... Y2 or something like that).

Have heard of higher bids and lower bids than these being accepted and rejected. So there's no strategy that can be advised.

The best strategy is to put in a minimum bid at time of booking, if you're interested in upgrading, and then check what the loads or seat maps are like before the cut-off time of T-72 and then put in a higher bid. Well, that'll be my strategy anyway... ;)

Not sure if it's good value KUL-BKK. A 2 hour flight on a 737. And I've already paid for a higher class (V) so that QFF miles and SCs are earned and for a seat (MYR 20 for row 5).

All prices in MYR

I'd save the cash if it were a B737.

Disagree.

On a short sector like KUL-BKK I'd save the case merely because of the shortness of the sector, not because it's a 737.

But on a 3-4 hour sector on a 737 absolutely consider a MHupgrade worthwhile (depending on bid price) as MH really jam them in down the back. Seat pitch definitely like an LCC in Y.

You can also pay MYR 20 and secure an exit row or row 5.

Disagree. I was seated at a window seat at row 5 aboard a B737 recently and found the journey very comfortable, and I am by no measure small or short.

The J product on the B737 is significantly and sufficiently inferior to that found on the B777, A330 and A380 to discourage me to upgrade on a 3-4 hour flight. Even if I wasn't seated at a bulkhead seat I imagine I could get by just fine for such a short flight. YMMV for the definition of "short".

Of course, all this is moot if the minimum offer price MH accepts is obscenely low like on my recent KUL-DPS-KUL sectors + the flights are being operated by B777. Upgrade = no brainer. :)

Had a recent unsuccessful upgrade bid from KUL to SYD last weekend. Bid MYR1120 where the minimum bid was MYR750. Informed by email at T-50 of unsuccessful bid. There was no J inventory left when I checked at T-72. Flight was completely full!
Will be trying again in a few weeks.

Do you need your Enrich FF number in to get the offer to upgrade? I booked with my AA FF# but no offer to upgrade seems to have come up. There is only a few award seats left in J at the moment.

I got an upgrade offer in December for kul -pen with QFF number attached. Not all flights will be selected though.
