Ad man Todd Sampson has been appointed to the QF Board.
I guess that means scruffy hair and black T shirts with cartoon characters might become the dress code for QF lounges.

Can't see that he's lifted Fairfax's fortunes (he's also on their board)

The board probably needs an injection of (close to) youth and some fresh ideas.

I wonder if he worked on the recent ad campaign, that so far I'd assume is being seen as a success.

Don't think so - looks like a different agency?

Doesn't really seem to be his style anyway: too easily forgettable and subtle as a two-by-four to the head :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yet another one with no airline experience. But then I guess Qantas is all about spin and marketing these days, actually flying planes around is very much secondary to their core business.

Re: New appointment to the Qantas Board

Does this mean we'll start seeing better advertisement campaigns?

I haven't seen any of the new ads, and from what I've heard about it, I don't want to. They sound about as bad as the old "sport star" safety videos.

As funny as it seems, no airline experience is not exactly a problem, provided that you both know what you don't know, and as a result you listen to actual subject matter experts.
It allows you to go in and question everything, it allows you to make decisions without irrelevant history becoming involved.

Where there is a problem is when people don't know what they don't know, and thus start taking guesses rather than ask questions. In fact the worst possible person whom you can put on a board is someone with just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

you don't need everyone on the board to have airline experience, you need a mix of people from different fields. last time i checked many on the board had extensive airline backgrounds.

Re: New appointment to the Qantas Board

I think Todd Sampson will be a real asset to the Board. He brings some serious creative thinking and approaches. The Board needs fresh thinking, and industry experience is clearly not enough to ensure the success of a Board.

Sampson has a lot more intuition than just an 'advertising' person and questions out dated or foolish thinking.

EDIT: I doubt anyone can raise the fortunes of print media whether it be Fairfax, or Newscorp who lied about their losses till the truth came out. I see that Gina Rinehart voted against Sampson.

My thoughts exactly. Style [I use the word loosely] over substance.

What qualifications does he have to run an airline?????
Seems like a politically correct / spin related decision

non-executive director.
He'd have nothing to do with running the airline itself. He'd have a say in firing Joyce.

Never knew individual board members "ran" companies (other than individuals with that specific responsibility such as AJ). Isn't the role of the board, as a collective they oversee the operation of the company? Thus, in a competitive industry where marketing/branding is critical, having someone with some expertise/experience in the area on the board really does seem to make sense.

Is that the one with all the depressed people?

Interesting way to look at it.

As I have autism and rarely pickup the right emotions anyway, I saw it more as a longing to come home, happiness at seeing the "red roo" and excitement when family is there to meet them at the airport. Of course, I could have completely misread all of the signs ;)
