Should I credit to BAEC?

Hi.

I'm currently QF SG and have just been comped another year, although on the 25th I have a J BKK-HND and Y HND-CTS booked which would have taken me over the line for my 31st Dec membership year. I also have the return flights J CTS-HND-BKK (don't ask me why the system booked me into Y for 1 flight, I have no idea...) in the start of my membership year.

As I have been comped, I basically have a year to get to the BAEC OWS equivalent. With fairer and simpler and my own general lack of domestic flights I have thought now may be an appropriate time to move away from QFF. I would like to maintain OWS at least, but do not have many paid flights in 2015 so far so may end up on MH flying around Asia for kicks...

Any thoughts on switching or staying (or even another program entirely)? Would it be easier to get TCs on BAEC than SC on QF with MH?

Also, are there minumum BA segments that must be achieved? I can probably find a way to do this if so, but may swing the pendulum towards another program.

Thanks!

not sure on BAEC but CX has no minimum own metal sector requirement and qualification can be mileage based (or sector based) which may suit your long haul patterns flying in J.

(60k miles for MPC Gold which is OWS)

They may also status match you to silver to avoid having to build those status miles (30K) first.

BA program very good for getting OWS for sectors in the 2000 mile+ range. Two returns between SE Asia and Australia (or NE Asia) just about does it. Subject to minimum sector requirements (BA code, not necessarily metal)- I think 4 flights are required.

Short haul redemptions are quite good and even long hauls OK (as in less points than QF).

Then switch your credit cards to either amex/spg or Citi diners/mc-> spg and you'll get much more value than qf 1:1 earning

You definitely need 4 BA coded flights to get OWS and OWE. However you do earn the same tier points on all One World flights and the ease of getting to OWS is similar to how Qantas was before simpler and fairer. (AA need 4 flights too but they and MH may offer alternative avenues)

Credit cards are earning on SQ/Asia miles/warehousing.

The BAEC would mostly just be for status I think, unless burn rates beat Cathay at 1:1.

Yep. 1:1 is OK for BA but SPG dilutes it too much compared to other 1:1 programs. (In Singapore my Citi card can tfr to SQ, MH, BA, DL, BR, GA, or CX so it really is a matter of picking the best at the time, unfortunately AU cards generally aren't so flexible )

BA's low fuel fine short haul redemptions (even on QF) are the best value I've found. Particularly ex LHR.

I've got a HKG-KUL coming up soon and it appears according to the QFF and BAEC calculators on the respective QF/BA websites that I'm better off crediting to QF:

QF - 1,977 QFF and 80SC
BA - 1,965 Avios and 40TP.

Mileage Monkey says this sector should earn 80SC. Why the BA/QF discrepancy?

1945 miles according to BA, Qantas is more generous at this type of level (if it was 55 miles more, BA would be better IMHO)

that I'm better off crediting to QF:

If you are chasing status, yes QF is better (as this is a non-compete route). BA <2000 miles is only 40 TP's. >2000 miles it's 140 TP's.

In terms of points, BA wins in most cases, accounting for award cost as well. Looking at SYD-SIN J award, for example, using QF FF you get 3.3% of such an award, using BAEC you get 4.9%.

Assuming you are talking about status earning, it would need to be 425 miles more for better status earn via BA ..... remembering the zones for calculating SC's (QF) and TP's (BA) are based on flown miles not awarded miles. KUL-HKG is only 1575 miles.

Indeed. Sorry about that. Was in a hurry and messed up my calculations. Rest stands though re the difference in qf and ba and the magic 2k.

Do you have a UK address? BA officially still do not allow Australian residents to sign up to BAEC.

I recently switched to BAEC as a mostly Australian based person with a UK address. I signed up in to BAEC in September just prior to travelling back to the UK and realising I would get the required 4 segments and would be able to hit BAEC Gold (OWE) with my US travel this month.. albeit with a bit of creative routing via PHX with US Airways ;). I would have just been able to retain QF SG otherwise. This gives me OWE from Dec 2014 until November 2016 with a guaranteed soft landing to Silver (OWS) until November 2017.

There are some trade-offs, such as no premium telephone line for those (domestic) QF bookings for when things go wrong and no status bonus. However the benefits for me personally outweighed those, and in QF's simpler and fairer world I decided to vote with my feet.

No need for a UK address specifically. Almost anywhere outside Australia/NZ will do. Some people when signing up get accidentally distracted by the Sound of Music, and manage to join OK ... ;-) ... although perhaps not recommended if serious about status.
