EK would doubtless consider itself to be a punctual airline.

Unfortunately it isn't immune from weather related delays.

Sunday 7 December 2014's EK419 (SYD to BKK and DXB) operated by A380 A6-EBY should depart at 1945 but tonight crept out ahead of curfew at 2256. It took off at 2309. The airline might count itself fortunate not to incur an hotel bill for perhaps 400 plus passengers and crew. The flight is expected to be 181 minutes late into BKK at after 0300 local time.

EK418 this morning (Monday 8 December) arrived SYD two hours and 19 minutes late at 1104. Hence the 1015 to CHC only pulled away from the SYD International terminal at about 1242, two hours and 27 minutes late. Aircraft is B773ER A6-EBR.

The return working (EK419) is normally due back into SYD at 1815 so it will be late tonight. The onwards flight to BKK and DXB will also be late as it is only allowed 90 minutes in SYD. Some of my relatives have used these milk run flights to get to LHR or other European ports as the fares may be cheaper, or seat availability better, than direct MEL or SYD to DXB flights operated by EK.

EK would doubtless consider itself to be a punctual airline.
I don't think so.

With DXB being such a bottleneck, in terms of ATC, lack of runways, etc, most flights through DXB will always be late.

Ask me how I know...

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

clifford, perhaps I poorly phrased it. I meant 'Publicly, Emirates would promote itself as a punctual airline (along with promoting its record order for A380s, its 'reach' across the world, its frequency, its modern aircraft, its crew, its meals, chauffeur drive and all that.')

I wasn't necessarily agreeing with any claims, just thinking what a so called 'spin doctor' ( a term I dislike) would say if asked.

I will ask how you know: are you a frequent first class passenger, or an air traffic controller, a pilot or a cabin crew member? I don't think you're a cleaner at DXB airport (unless you're doing it for a day as part of a new series of 'the 50 worst jobs in the 21st century world.)

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Affected by what AFFer Ansett suggested was fog in DXB yesterday, EK406 this morning (Wed 31 December 2014) is 155 minutes late and will not arrive MEL until 0900. EK404 from DXB and SIN is arriving MEL at 1045, an hour and 55 minutes late.

EK409 this morning departed MEL 77 minutes late at 0452, while EK406 from MEL to AKL is expected to commence its jaunt across the Tasman at 1020, 130 minutes late, with a fairly snappy 80 minute turnaround in MEL forecast.

In SYD, the arriving EK412 from DXB is delayed by 140 minutes to a forecast 0920 while EK418 from DXB and BKK is anticipated to be 62 minutes late, pulling into the gate at SYD at 0947. EK412 from SYD to AKL is expected to depart an hour and 40 minutes late at 1025 while unusually, the normally punctual EK415 to DXB ex SYD this morning departed 80 minutes late at 0720.

EK434 from DXB to BNE is forecast to arrive two hours and 25 minutes late at 0905 Queensland time while EK434 from BNE to AKL is anticipated to be delayed from its timetabled departure of 0825 to 1105.

EK422 from DXB to PER is an hour late and due at the latter at 1355 Perth time.

You seem infatuated by aircraft being late yet completely missed the one thing that is worth posting about, EK missing the curfew last night and diverting, complete with the Iranian soccer team

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

markis10, thank you. I had not looked up every site. Although you did not say so, the aircraft was diverted to MEL and then left at the 'small hour' of around 0430 for an approximate 0600 arrival in SYD yesterday morning, doubtless with some tired and perhaps grumpy passengers after spending time in the MEL transit lounge if allowed off the A380 at that airport.

I originally restricted the delays and cancellations discussion to QF9 because at the time it was constantly running late. For a while it improved, but with the latest AJ-driven QF timetable 'enhancements' (understandable if the goal is to obtain better utilisation of the expensive, complex, not terribly popular with operators worldwide as only 13 airlines have them and some might suggest mistakenly purchased A388s), QF9 has again reverted to having quite a few problems in delayed departures if QF10 is late ex DXB. There are 320 AFFers who like the QF delays and cancellations thread.

AFFer mannej complained that other airlines were not receiving similar attention to QF for delays or cancellations and made the excellent suggestion that it should be expanded to cover other airlines.

I complied with mannej's suggestion. I appreciate that your knowledge of all matters aviation is probably almost unrivalled on this site (some of the other moderators plus airline staff would be at least equal, of course) but the site has many casual visitors as well as members who may not often post, but who read information such as about delays and cancellations to form a view as to which operator they should fly with. The site also doubtless attracts those who have acquired thousands of QF, VA or other airlines' FF points through use of a credit card but who rarely fly and therefore who perceive that they need to be informed of good and bad points before they make a decision as to which airline to give their patronage.

This sort of publicity is rarely welcomed by transport operators who would prefer that we all believed the expensive and glossy advertising that only mentions the claimed 'good things' (and nor is it welcomed by some airline or surface transport operator staff who are naturally protective of their jobs and colleagues, with reasonable consumer confidence one of the keys to getting passengers travelling), but the reality with any transport operator is that there will be delays and cancellations. If they are one offs, that's understandable; if they are however systemic (and not all these will be the fault of the operator: not even AJ or JB can control the weather, for instance), it may indicate something that travellers ought be wary of with an (in this case) airline.

Sunday 7 December 2014's EK419 (SYD to BKK and DXB) operated by A380 A6-EBY

A6-EBY is a 777 not A380 and you had me excited for 10 mins that EK418/419 had some A380 upgrades

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The remarkable logistical feats that Emirates undertake every day is more easily understood if you have a closer look at how Dubai airport operates.
There is a fantastic 10-part series called "Ultimate Airport Dubai" from the National Geographic Channel which details every part of the airport operation - in particular they cover the intense pressure that they experience to meet the Sydney curfew; see this at the 4.35 min mark of the link below. - fascinating stuff really.
Here's episode 1:

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

browski, thank you for the link although unfortunately the video now comes up as 'not available. This may be a copyright issue.

Whether as a result of fog, late connections or just the very busy airport that DXB has become as mentioned by AFFer browski above, EK's flights to Oz overnight and those continuing on to AKL or CHC today have had a lot of way behind time running.

EK406 (A380 A6-EDD) was meant to depart MEL at 0810 this morning (Sunday 22 February 2015) but took off at 1147 for a forecast arrival in the Kiwi 'Harbour City' at 1652, 187 minutes behind the timetable. Since the return working EK407 is not due out until 1850 and can often pick up time across the Tasman, it should hopefully arrive back in MEL on time this evening.

EK434 from BNE to AKL (A6-EDO) was due out according to the schedule at 0825 but took off at 1106 Queensland time for a suggested AKL arrival two hours and 11 minutes late at 1646.

A6-EBW (B773ER) operating the 1015 SYD-CHC was two hours late departing SYD and took off at 1231, being not due in CHC at 1709 not 1520.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK406 from DXB to MEL (A380 A6-EEO) is about to land in MEL this morning (Tuesday 4 August 2015) at roughly 0843 after it diverted to PER for a medical emergency. The next leg from MEL to AKL is expected to depart at 0945 in lieu of the timetabled 0710, although 0945 may be somewhat optimistic.

If it arrives in AKL at the revised (late) time of 1530 as the AKL airport website suggests, it should be able to turn around and operate the return EK407 on time as that is not timetabled to depart AKL for MEL and DXB until 1730 NZ time this afternoon.

UAE (Emirates) 405 appears to have diverted from its Melbourne-Singapore routing tonight, making a short stop in Alice Springs, due to resume journey approx 2200 ACST

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK418 from BKK to SYD this morning (Tuesday 18 August 2015) is operated by B773ER A6-ECU and is about to land in SYD at 0936, almost two hours later than the timetabled 0745. The ongoing 'tag' flight from SYD to CHC has been altered from 0915 to 1115 in departing as a consequence, one of the disadvantages of using EK for a transTasman trip.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Yesterday (Saturday 29 August 2015) the early morning EK415 0600 timetabled departure from SYD to DXB diverted via DRW, where it stopped from 1004 to 1134 for a 1625 hours, two hours 10 minutes late arrival in DXB, having departed SYD eight minutes early.

Emirates News | has not had anything posted re this.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK406 arrived in MEL from DXB 73 minutes late at 0638 on Saturday 19 September, this morning. However instead of departing at 0710 for its jaunt across the Tasman to AKL, it has not long left at 1024. This should not however delay its return this afternoon and early evening as the flight has a generous time on the ground in AKL that can normally accommodate a delay of this magnitude.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK408, the 'small hours' 0100 arrival in MEL is usually on time but that was not the case this morning (Monday 21 September 2015) when it arrived at 0335. The return 0240 hours timetabled EK409 (B773 A6-EGL) back to KUL and DXB did not depart until 0520, making for an uncomfortable wait for non-lounge passengers at a time when most of us would like to be asleep.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK434 is shown as arriving in BNE 64 minutes late tomorrow (Tuesday 29 September) at 0714 ex DXB.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The weather around BNE tonight has been very stormy (although Mexicans like myself are 1700 kilometres away) but there do not seem to have been many major delays to flights.

However long haul EK435, the 2045 to DXB operated by A380 A6-EDP is still in BNE 42 minutes after its timetabled departure.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The EK404 arrival from SIN and DXB this morning (Monday 9 November 2015) in MEL is delayed from 0850 to a forecast 1010.

A few hundred kilometres north, EK412, the 1015 on Sunday 8 November from DXB to SYD took off at 1228 and is approaching SYD for an 0839 arrival instead of 0700, the aircraft being A380 A6-EEF. The so-called 'tag' leg to AKL is expected to be delayed from 0845 to 1005, which seems a bit optimistic even if there are no passenger delays due to the Australian Border Force strike.

EK418 from SYD to CHC is delayed from 1015 to a forecast 1115 on Monday 9 November 2015, as the aircraft is coming in from DXB and BKK at 1002 instead of the timetabled 0845 in the shape of B773ER A6-ECT. Once again, an 1115 forecast departure for CHC is a tad unrealistic given the myriad of tasks and handover to a new crew necessary for the 'tag' sector across the Tasman.

Re: General Emirates Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

EK406, the 0810 from MEL to AKL on Thursday 26 November is expected to depart at 1015 due to not arriving from DXB until 0857 in lieu of 0635.

This is something to be wary of when considering which airline to use across the Tasman as DXB airport can suffer from delays due to sandstorms, fog or simply because it is extremely busy.
