As the executor, when dealing with Telstra to close my father's account, they said they would require a copy of death cert. HUCA and said I was him and wanted to close my account as was going to use my mobile. Problem solved.

I understand however, that Pushka's and RAM's problems could not be so easily dealt with. Companies, whose call centre staff cannot use commonsense, hide behind privacy laws and won't show any compassion, absolutely disgust me.

Now that's thinking on your feet. Something I don't do well.

The hiding behind privacy has become an excellent means of avoiding scrutiny.

Just moving my mum into residential care on Friday. It's quite a performance. Goodness knows how aged people without family cope with it all.

It's not a fantastic room but it's going to be upgraded in 6 months. But she is very happy. She will have company, activities, someone preparing her meals and someone checking on her 24/7. I knew she was frail after the stroke in July and while recovering from that somewhat I can see she has weakened considerably.

Even 6 months ago she would have baulked at it. But now she's excited.

I hope there's a magic bullet by the time I get there.

All the best with that, as people keep telling me "you've only got one Mum", and it's really important to keep her happy.

My Mum moved not long ago, not into care but into a retirement village. She had to sell her house, she'd lived there for nearly 50 years, move from a cold climate to a hot and humid one in another state, leave all of her old, old friends (did I mention she'd lived there for 50 years?).

She's like a pig in mud. She's on top of all the gossip, has lots of new friends and for the first time in her life is living in a modern dwelling. I reckon it's knocked 20 years off her.

I reckon your Mum will blossom in her new surroundings, it's great that she's positive about it. It was a huge upheaval for us (her family), but if your experience is half as good as ours has been then you're laughing.

Looking forward to an update after the big day.

I have yet to cancel dads land line with Telstra (we are still renovating the house ready for renting) Thanks for the tip, I will get hubby to do the impersonation.
Guess I will have to do the same with electricity account.
Mail has been re-directed.

Its really not that hard, only needs doing once & avoids the need for ongoing battles

Hmm. Not really. Everyone wants a certified copy. Not a copy copy. I've had to send a certified one to each of the following - Centrelink, the Residential home, the old place she's leaving, and the Doctors. And we don't get them back. Then if Telstra, Optus (to cancel), gas/electricity to cancel, the Bank. It's getting ridiculous having to get certified copies (they need to be certified by a lawyer!)

I've just realised I also need to redirect the mail. That can wait. My/her signature is rather excellent. :p

I was never asked for a certified copy. You should be able to get by with one witnessed by a JP if required. Most Council libraries offer a free JP sigining if you don't know someone.

Talking about 'signature' = very bad idea.

Redirecting mail can be painful unless you redirect all mail for your name and her name. Daughter & mother after all.

The certification is annoying but they were pretty clear a copy wouldn't do. JPs can witness they've sighted the original but not certify the document.

Different surnames though. This one I can sort though.

 Certifying something is a true and correct copy of the original isn't the sole domain of lawyers. JP's most certainly can certify documents, according to the Government: Justices of the Peace | australia.gov.au and in particular, the SA handbook for JP's here (see P14):
http://www.agd.sa.gov.au/sites/agd....eedures Codes/jp-handbook-south-australia.pdf

Certify a true copy of an original document
To certify that a document is a true copy of an original you must examine
and compare the copy with the original and make sure they are identical.
The person must present both the copy and the original for your inspection.
You then write on the copy that you certify that the copy is a true copy of
the original.

Well who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks. :p

That makes things a whole lot easier. Poor JP is going to earn their (0) money.

Thank you everyone.

90% of what I do as a JP is "certify" copies of documents. Had to get a stamp made up.

Similar to me - I'm not a JP, but am in the long list of people who can certify documents in certain circumstances. Stamp certainly takes all that writing away...
