The WP shadow

I observed premium boarding in MEL one morning. Passengers, who seemed to be from a lounge, specifically chose not to use the priority boarding lane because they didn't want to push in on those waiting in the general queue. Their brief couple of words to each other revealed they considered it bad manners to skip to the front.

Use of priority boarding is not an indication of status, but the decision not to use priority boarding may be an indication of manners.

What the?? it's a benefit to use the PB Lane! it's not "bad manners"! bad manners is pushing through everyone in the general lane to board!

I think the bad manners element can surface in how you exercise your benefits.

Swanning up to the front of the PB lane and cutting in front of someone about to hand over their boarding pass - for no other reason than just because 'you can' - is not classy. And if the general lane is short and moving quickly there may be little benefit to cut in anyway.

I was talking about a limited example. If there are dedicated and separate lanes and multiple boarding bridges the above doesn't apply.

Just because you have a benefit doesn't mean you need to act like a DYKWIA. And if you're not doing it deliberately, that's potentially even worse.

I don't think i have ever seen anyone just shove forward and cut in front of someone (if there is one gate agent like VA). They wait til they are called over, which is usually after they have scanned the person already there... Nothing wrong with that...

Given long enough it is possible for any or all possibilities to occur. Just because it can occur does not mean it occurs regularly.

I have never seen people push in as you describe and firmly believe that if/when it occurs it would be very rare and totally random.

a passenger coming from the qantas domestic business lounge, towards the end of boarding, with a single gate agent (or where both gate agents are now processing the general boarding lane), and stepping in front of my 80 year old mother who is next in line simply because they have status is not 'pushing in' and is not bad mannered?

If your 80 year old mother makes sure to be at the gate before boarding starts then she will board the plane before everyone else, according to QF boarding policy, and won't need to line up in any queue.
The system is very logical as long as everyone (including gate agents) follow the rules.

Getting back OT it seems that the problem re Amadeus has not been fixed as yet. It is T-80 for flights for me and Mrs RC but we are on different booking refs.
Have put the bookings together but they won't appear as joined until OLCI commences.
I logged in and chose my 4 C .... leaving 4A & B free. Logged in as Mrs RC (Gold) and the only seat available for her as a gold memeber was 4B and 4F. So no wonder the shadow is often not there for WP's...if the golds can only choose the middle seat. Something that needs to be fixed i think:)

Getting back OT I am chilled here in Boulder, Colorado with a few quite lovely Blue Moons.

Maybe we should have a break out thread for those of us who are chilled about the WP shadow and what we up to in order to soothe the pain?

Two OT posts in a row. What is AFF coming to :?:

A shadow is a luxury, today I checked in for BNE-SYD and have been allocated 27B on a 738. Wow, really charming the WPs lately... No window preference and the third last row of the plane.

Middle seat to boot. Enjoy that! Mind you, given the issue with the Gold J passengers being demoted to Y yesterday with Qantas International it's probably lucky you even had a seat.

Was this due to you changing flights ?

No... It wasn't.

The WP in front of me at the lounge was given a middle seat also despite an aisle preference, in row 20 or something as I overheard...

Wow that sounds atrocious! Thread reference?

Really, the bottom of the barrel is being well and truly scraped. So much for turning a corner, more like turning their back.

Assuming you hadn't pre-allocated ... one would hope the flight was full for an over the counter seat allocation like that.

Aircraft change?

I'd hp[e it was an aircraft change. I've been caught out once by this monstrosity. pre-selected 25A on a 767, checked in at the same seat. Got to the gate and was a 737. Its a long walk back down there.

Lady next to me in 27B was very pissed off by it all. Another WP who didnt get a preference of an aisle.
