Hi all,
Last week I booked a flight for my family on Germanwings travelling from Paris to Prague in December. It is a connecting flight with a one hour layover in Dusseldorf.
Do we need to collect our luggage and re check it and also check in at Dusseldorf or will our luggage automatically go straight through to the next flight? I am concerned that with such a short connection time that we may be in trouble as check in closes 30mins before take off. What happens if our first flight arrives late and we don't have enough time? Does it get foggy or snowy in Dusseldorf in December and therefore end up stranded there? I have tried contacting the airline but they have not responded to my email. As we don't speak either German, French or Czech I am concerned that we may not be able to understand what we are meant to do when changing planes in such a short period.
Last night I also noticed that Smartwings has a direct flight from Paris to Prague on the same day. Perhaps I should book that also and just accept that I will be losing money on my Germanwings flights. The only problem with Smartwings is that they only allow 15kg of luggage. I have noticed that It is a codeshare flight with Czech airlines so would we be allowed to take the extra Kgs being on Czech air?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Cheers,

I have found in German airports that there is no problem with my English being understood, and I am sure that will be the case for your family .

The Germanwings site says "If you are booked on Germanwings flights changing planes in Cologne or Stuttgart, you have to go through security again if you are arriving from a Non-Schengen* and/or non-EU country. In Cologne and Stuttgart the security check is in the same area as the departure gates." So I take from that if arriving from Paris, that is in a Schengen and EU country, you should not have to recover baggage and clear security again at Dusseldorf.

Try the contact form on the Germanwings site and let us know how you go.

As regards baggage rules, the advice I have received from various carriers (eg from AY for a flight on Flybe) was that the ticketing airline rules apply to baggage. So worth following up with Smartwings to be sure if you decide to pursue that option.

Thanks for your reply.
I have sent Germanwings my question on their contact form twice but not received a reply. I will also follow up with Smartwings regarding luggage. I am leaning towards booking the Smartwings flight just for the peace of mind that there are no connections involved and therefore less chance something goes wrong. As there is no option to get a refund on Germanwings I will just forfeit that fare but the flight will still be booked so if something goes wrong at the airport with Smartwings we can always just jump over to Germanwings. A bit crazy but that's the adventure of travelling
Cheers.
