Got a return booking to LAX next year where for the LAX-SYD sector I'm booked into PE but hoping for an eventual upgrade to J.

In the meantime I'm just wondering about seat selection as to which might be the better seat, 10C or 11C.

Any recommendations?

I do have a return flight to LAX in J coming up in September so I can take a look and see what the seating is like.

Thanks.

I would recommend requesting the upgrade asap as VA confirm them when you call. Then you don't have to worry about PE seating.

If you do get stuck in PE I prefer row 11 as it has a bit more leg room but obviously you then have people reclining in front. Depends on your personal preference.

That's true only if there's availability, at the moment there isn't

I concur, 10 does have less leg room, so I'd go for 11. There's also a little bit of traffic and people milling closer to 10 as that's the entry point for the bathrooms and bar. I find that the recline of the person in front in PE on the 777 does not feel 'claustrophobic' at all.
The only real benefit of 10 is that if you have someone next to you they can much more easily climb over you if they need to get out.

As you know from my other thread, we're in the same boat with our LAX-SYD flight, booked in PE but currently no availability for J upgrades. We've previously travelled in rows 11, 12 and 13 in PE on several trips to and from LAX, and although the seat pitch is of course much better than in Y, we've had people in front on a couple of those flights who have reclined their seats for almost the entire trip, which certainly wasn't ideal especially when whichever of us was sitting by the window needed to get out, so this time have booked Row 10. Neither OH or are I tall (I'm 5'1", he's 5'8"), so slightly less leg room in Row 10 doesn't bother us at all - we'd quite happily trade that off for no one reclining in front!

Ay 5' 1" you will be fine - take the ottoman and cruise. He? maybe not so fine - it really is tight (In fact most find the ottoman useless.)

Thanks for those links Serfty, have had a read throug them and also several other threads on the same subject, and Row 10 seems to be either love it or hate it! The flight is still pretty wide open at the moment, so would be able to move elsewhere but to be honest, it's likely we'll stick with Row 10. Neither of us have ever been able to sleep in PE anyway, and I always find the fold-down footrests in the other rows to be very uncomfortable, as I almost have to keep "stretched" to keep my feet on them, so the ottoman sounds a much better option! Hubby tends to be a bit more long-bodied/short-legged, so the reduced legroom probably won't be an issue. The bonus of not having anyone recline into us is a big factor, and I also prefer the window seat but out of pity for hubby, I usually sit on the aisle - as a nervous flyer, I tend to make quite a few toilet trips and hate having to climb over him or make him get up on multiple occasions (not that he complains!) - so the proximity of the toilets is actually a good thing for me LOL

ETA: Of course, I'm keeping fingers crossed that reward seats will come up and we can snaffle upgrades for the flight, and then the above will all be a moot point :)

Whatever you do, just don't end up in the last row, as the recline is a noticeably less, which also means the seat in front of you is closer to your face and it's harder to get out of the seat

I'm beginning to think I might opt for row 10. I'm not really that tall and I think I'd rather have slightly less leg room and not have someone reclining their seat into my face for 14 hours or so making it harder to get up.

Almost thinking it might be worth having a poll on this subject.

I recently flew to LA in row 10 and found it much better than row 12 from a previous visit. I'm 5ft 11 and found the leg room fine. There's enough room for the person in the inside seat to get out without the person in the aisle seat having to get up. From my previous flight in row 12 I also experienced the person in front reclining their seat for most of the flight and found it a tight squeeze getting in and out of my seat even though it was an aisle seat. I would definitely choose row 10 again if I had the choice.

Thanks all will give 10c a shot on my flight to LAX if that is no good will change it for the return trip.

FWIW, I am a bulkhead aficionado, but the only bulkheads I will most definitely avoid are row 10 on VA 777's and row 1 on VA Trans Tasman 738's.
