Worlds Safest Airlines for 2012

Interesting list, not sure there is much in it to determine NZ at 2, VA at 9 and QF at 13.

JACDEC collects and analyses safety occurrences from airlines around the world. The Safety Index ratings are calculated by comparing hull loss accidents and serious incidents suffered by airlines over the past 30 years to the revenue passenger kilometres they have performed over the same period. Airlines are also measured against other international safety benchmarks.

The one I find interesting is EK at number 4, given the incidents such as MEL tail scrape in the last few years. In my mind, that incident is a very serious safety issue.

of course, as with all "top xx_ lists" it comes down to the measurement criteria.

I find several interesting - Hainan at 8 - now where are all those vocal "You won't catch me dead on a Chinese carrier" AFF members now?

SQ at 30? ouch! MU at 36 / AA at 42 / US at 40 / SAS at 50

Probably still not flying a chinese carrier, on the believe that much like financial results past performance is not a good way to view future performance!

Its interesting how an airline that has never lost a passenger jet can be below airlines that have, they say its based on the past 30 years preformance, if thats the case surely QF scores much higher than many above it. Personally I think Qantas and Virgin Australia along wth Singapore Airlines are the safest. Didn't Air New Zealand fly a plane into the side of an Antarctica Mountain some time in the past 30 years.

It is funny you mention SQ - they lost a 747 last decade, which is much closer in time then NZ losing their DC10 over Antarctica

No, it was 34 years ago, like the last Qantas fatality in 1970 (TAA) not captured in the data, although it would appear they have missed the Safe Air crash in 2011 in regards NZ.

Never mind the ranking order, look at the 'Safety rating' number (assume its linear, not logrithmic!). No doubt a factor based on weighting of various criteria (obviously passenger deaths or hull losses aren't weighted that heavily ).

If you stepped back and said "I want to fly the safest airline', would anyone really think 'Don't fly Qantas, they are twice as 'unsafe' as Finnair'?Have gone to the site to get the detail behind the table. No dice. Looks like I'll have to buy the rag when I'm in Germany later this month. I'm on AC next Sunday, so at #25, 0.032 rating (SIX times worse than Finnair!!) I'm apparently making a relatively unsafe choice!
