Photo I took from VA850 SYD to MEL earlier today. I think it’s the smoke from the fires in Northern Victoria. The view from the top. Initially thought it was a weird cloud formation.

From the air bridge before a QF CHC MEL flight.
QF B737 with USA C130's that fly to Antarctic. Saw on TV that AU have 120 people on the ice. USA will have a lot more at McMurdo Station (up to 1200)
DHL B757 freighter behind the EK A380, that fly's the DXB-SYD-CHC-SYD-DXB route.

Flight from Sydney to Haneda with JAL late last year.


Leaving Sydney: Sydney Olympics Park, Homebush



Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, with Jackson's Intnl. Airport just right of centre. The flight continued northwards over the Owen Stanley Ranges but the weather was unhelpful.



Continuing northwards from P.N.G. with JAL to Haneda. Part of the North Coast of Morobe Province. The big sediment plume is spewing from the Kwama River, about 200km SE of Madang and 100km NNE of Lae. Nicely timed entertainment for a geographer before dinner!

Keeping us up . A Boeing 777-346(ER) engine partly bathed by a lurid sunrise passing under the fuselage of JL51 as it approached the Qld/NSW border about 40km west of Goondiwindi, heading for Sydney. December 2025.

On a clear day, starboard side passengers HND-SYD catch a view of the Illawarra coastline extending south from Sydney; a string of headlands and beaches, backed by the Royal National Park and the coastal settlements of northern Wollongong. Then it's a left turn and descent to Kingsford Smith Airport's South-North runway(s).
