I have a BNE-CNS flight booked under a SC promo (50% more SCs) which I have to change. The booking is Business and when I look at the date I need to change to, I note the change fee is $1 but there is also an option of flying BNE-TSV-CNS on different flight numbers for $15 more.

Great I thought, but it has a message that the TSV-CNS will be in Economy. That got me looking at just what the SC earn would be and it seems a bit confusing. The calculator says BNE-TSV = 40 and TSV-CNS =40. So 80 compared with 60 to fly direct (forgetting the bonus 50% for the moment). When I do a dummy booking, it states the SC earn will be 60, which I assume is the TSV-CNS at economy earn.

My question is whether changing a business booking (even if flying economy), should still earn business SCs or do they give only economy SC's for the economy leg? If not, then the old adage "why fly direct, when you can connect" doesn't work in this case.

Also, do any QF flights TSV-CNS have business?

Hmmm. I don't think I'll bother. I'll just rebook direct I think.

My fare is business D, which indicates a sale fare, but it wasn't really. I did get the small discount for buying through the business portal, so I guess that was it. But I'm guessing that if I change it now to a combined business and economy, they'll view that as exactly that (and charge me a bit more for the privilege). I may as well just fly direct. and save $14!

I'm 99% sure QF only operate the Dash-8s between CNS and TSV, so economy only. A pleasant scenic flight though!

Going back a while - to the glorious mASA says - I did a run CNS-TSV-BNE-CBR in J. The CNS-TSV was in economy and earned as such, even though the whole booking was J (in the end I flew CNS-BNE-CBR due to a mechanical breakdown but got ORC so all good).

I sometimes book J flights for relatives to or from Devonport (and then beyond). Devonport only operates Dash-8 economy flights and these legs only ever attract Y SCs and book into (I think) the flex Y bucket.

When booking indirect you do have to be very careful to check the cabin for each leg to make sure that you’re getting what you think.

This is more likely to be an issue when doing classic reward bookings.

If you’re not careful you could do a BNE-SYD-LHR classic reward booking on points where the BNE-SYD leg is in Business and SYD-LHR is in economy and pay just as many points as going Business the whole way.
