No passenger should be more than one seat away from an aisle - thats what I like!
2-2
1-2-1
2-3-2
2-4-2

Depends massively on an individual's height obviously. I'm reasonably tall and as such anything longer than 5 hours in any aircraft economy section is properly uncomfortable and the screen is completely unwatchable because I can't get my head far enough away from it, even when the seat in front isn't reclined.

The only aircraft with decent economy spacing is a Fokker 100, but they don't go for 5 hours anywhere, so it's a virtue you can't really benefit from.

Not just height but width as well especially at the shoulders.

Last week I flew from MEL to LHR on QF9 (obviously qantas 789) and experienced how good and how bad the Qantas config is.

On the MEL to PER leg the plane was almost chokkas in economy, I was in the isle of the middle 3 seats and had someone next to me. Both of us were what I would call average sized Aussie males and our shoulders were touching for most of the flight and elbow room forget it.

That said take away one seat and give 1/8th of that seat width to the remaining 8 seats I doubt the improvement would be any better anyway.

On the PER to LHR leg the middle seat was empty and it made the whole world of difference. It was probably one of the most comfortable Y long haul flights I have ever done.

As for leg room I am not tall but had no issues when the person in front reclined and also unlike on the A380 and A330’s Qantas flies the screen was still a comfortable distance away when the seat in front was reclined to still be able to watch it.

I will never understand what all that fuzz is about: You get what you pay for. In this respect, an airplane seat is not much different from, let’s say, buying a mediocre vs. a good cut of meat. You want to pay Economy, you get Economy. I tend to always be quite happy with my space in J

I’m betting if airlines decided to go back to recliner seats in J you would be having a good old crack despite getting what you pay for.

In fact I sense that is what is happening by default now. Less first, lie flat business becomes the new first and premium Y in a recliner the new business.

In my opinion pitch is more important than width. Some airlines have reduced their Y pitch to just 28 inches. Jetstar has a pitch of 29 inches .Not only are these shin crushing pitches uncomfortable they raise issues in respect of ability to evacuate quickly and medical issues such as cramping and dvt. Consumers in the USA have persuaded the FCA to introduce minimum standards of comfort and safety for coach class seating, however predictably, the airlines are resisting this attempt to influence their viability.

Flew QR 777 (as a week before change from an a320), 17" in Y (3-4-3). I'd say I won't be doing that again, but i've already booked prior to this flight for 9 hrs DOH HKG return, prior to this flight. Truly shtful experience. Lucky the person next to me was my partner. Wont be so lucky on the next one!

Totally agree, 17" is too small for me now, any smaller width than that and I won't fly it unless I have no other choice to get to my destination. I've done plenty of air caravan flights for work that have tiny seats, but only for a max 30 minute flight.
