I'm interested to hear other J flyers opinions on the question plaguing me on recent flights, of the plethora of Y passengers lining up through the J cabin to use the J toilet ever since onboard Air Marshalls deemed the curtain dividing the Y and J cabin on the 800 series a security issue.

I fly J, due to my own choice and pay for it using my own businesses funds or F/F upgrades, and wonder whether Qantas should be looking for some other way of dividing the cabin, as two of my most recent flights have seen Y passengers lining up and clogging the J cabin.

I dont ask to sound precious, because i'm certainly not, but when paying the sort of money you do to fly J, you'd expect a bit of peace and quiet during the flight, not the constant interruption of Y passengers wanting to use the front toilet instead of the rear ones where they were previously forced to when the curtain divided the cabin during flight.

According to the CSM on last nights flight, the cabin crew are meant to discourage Y pax from using the front toilet but its got so out of control they don't have the time.

Would love to hear the opinons of other J flyers.

On a 737 you have to wonder why you're wasting your money/points on upgrades. The service is hardly worth it and if you have the status then allocation of the exit row or immediately behind business class is fairly likely.

On the topic: I figure if the curtain is back and I'm forward of the wings then walking to the front of the cabin is appropriate. It's very difficult if there are carts in the aisle during service to get from row 6 to the back! A sprig of flowers and some air freshner is not likely to be sullied by the great unwashed such as myself deficating in the high class loos any more than J pax.

On a B747 or A330 I would just use one of the toilets in the WHY cabin as the business class cabin is clearly separate. On smaller aircraft I do not think it matters and I will try to use the toilet that is closest. I have on more than 1 occassion been told by the FAs to go down the back when lining up to use the J toilet.

I wonder what would happen if the only business class toilet sprung a leek or something and was put out of order.

Would any business class passengers needing to use the toilet embarass themselves and walk down the back to use the WHY toilet?

Absolutely not!

i'm o/s at present and was lucky enough to have bulkhead coming over to UK. The first crew to H.K. didn't mind me using the j toilet just in front of my seat. The H.K. crew did. I bow to authority. I'm usually blessed enough to sit very close to j toilet in Y and i admit i do use it if i'm able.

flying out with BA on wed. to montreal and expect to be using y toilets as i'll probably be right up back and i won't have a problem with using that toilet either.

i can understand tho. that some people may have prob. with people that didn't pay to sit in certain area to use that amenity.

I don't fly J for the service, I fly it for the extra space, and because I find myself in better condition post flight when flying J than Y.
When you have to step off the flight and go straight to a corporate training or motivational speaking engagement, you want to be in the best condition possible.
As far as using points, what else would I use them for, all of my intl flying is done in J, so its either use them for upgrades domestically or give them away.

The only real issue I have is when Y pax start lining up through the J cabin, rather than heading down the back. If it's only one person at a time using the toilet, no big deal, but its a different story when youve got 3 or 4 people lining up next to your seat.

Normally I don't really care, but three weeks ago I was travelling from SFO to BOS on the red eye having spent two great days off with work mate who is also a very good friend. She had bought an italian chandelier in San Fran, and we took it on the flight as hand luggage (very well wrapped). Amazingly going through the x-ray the TSA said that looks like a chandelier, very clever, not sure how many people travel with them in hand luggage.

We got on the flight, which was rather full, and found a suitable location for the precious cargo. Only a few moments before we were due to depart a young guy got on and having veiwed the state of the overheads back in whY, decided he would shove his back back in the tiny space in front of the chandelier. I reacted quickly enough to stop any damage, but the way the guy shoved his gear in there really pissed me off.

Regardless of where I was sitting I wouldn't just shove something in ignoring other people's bags and belongings.

Like many others here, I tend to use the toilet that is closest to my seat when flying in Y domestically.

As a courtesy though, I do not queue up outside the J toilet, but wait until it is vacant before getting out of my seat.

If travelling in J on a domestic flight (which is rare) it doesn't bother me who uses the J toilet.

On domestic flights (737s etc), I have noticed that they have largely given up on the practice of closing the curtains between J and Y, which would dissuade Y passengers from moving through J. Previously Y pasengers were actively dissuaded from using the J toilets - not any more it seems. They should damned well close those curtains and give the J passengers some privacy and peace and quiet.

To me it is all just part of the degradation in service levels for J passengers - at $950 CNS-BNE one way or $1,200 CNS-SYD one way I expect some serious effort at service.

No, I don't pay that, I won't, and my days of flying J for EVERY domestic flight have long since given way to grabbing a cheap seat and hopefully two or three empty seats at the back of Y. A 50% fare increase in 5 years concurrent with a serious dilution in service levels has priced me out of an experience that I no longer enjoy.

I asked the CSM on the ADL-BNE flight on Sun night and apparantly due to Qantas now carrying Air Marshalls, and their requirement of a clear line of sight from back to front they aren't allowed to close to curtain anymore.

Then why does it only apply to smaller aircrafts? Why the double standard? Does that mean that all 777, 747, 767 and A340 will have open curtains and nothing to separate the cabins, because the Air Marshalls need a clear line of sight?

I don't travel on J domestically, and seldom on international. But when i do (and i usually pay for itmyself or use my own FF points to upgrade), i would expect some exclusivity.

Maybe that is the reason for the open curtains!

That then begs other questions - for example, how can you justify using catering trolleys, which effective block an aisle...IF there was an incident these would create a real physical barrier.

Methinks the cabin crew find open curtains convenient on smaller aircraft so they can move more freely about all parts of the cabin.

On an 737 I am generally allocated Seats 4-7 so I tend to use the front toilet, its far too difficult to go all the way down the back with carts etc. On a 767 with the cabin segregation, I would definitely stick to the whY loos. Same goes for a 330 or 747.

Same here. Although recently I was sent to the lavs at the back, although I noticed that no-one else that went to the front from the rows around me was, I guess I ws just singled out!

The 738 only has 3 lavs for 168 passengers, the problem of a stretched aircraft. Given this, what can you ultimately expect. 156 Y pasengers get 2 lavs, thats going to be a real struggle at times.

Don't believe the line of sight story at all as the curtains are frequently closed on other aircraft types like the 763.

I did notice on a recent flight back from Broome, they did indeed close the curtains, first time I have seen that in a while.

The curtains are probably open for ease of movement for crew, and perhaps also so Y passengers can use the front lav. Annoying but flight crew usually send people back if they are forming a queue.
