WP asking Etiquette when flying International Y

been offered many things in the past by the FAs as WP in Y, newspapers, NCHS, the odd wine from F. Just wonder what the asking etiquette should be, a meal from J too much to ask for or does this step over the etiquette line. Just wonder is there a limit to what should be asked for (or offered by the FAs) or is it a case of whatever you can get away with when asking.

If asked if there is anything that would make my journey a little more comfortable the only request I have had is for a G & T or a whisky. these hve been served from F on a 380 or J on other aircraft....and very gratefully received. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking for more.

I would say the etiquette would be don't ask for anything, you are in Y because that is where you choose to be so what right do you have to ASK for anything more? If however they OFFER you something then consider it a bonus.

I think the point is that often ask what you want rather offering you something for your selection...

The problem with that is if you ask and then you get it then next time MOST people would expect the same. If the next time they didn't get what they asked for they would be on here whining about declining level of service standards etc. It is a no win situation really, so like I said if you get something it is a bonus to be happy about.

I suspect FAs ask but hope you don't ask for much at all because there is not much they can give you without really pushing the friendship, and a J meal would be out of bounds IMHO - (and just imagine trying to set it on a Y tray, and the filthy looks from those nearby).

Apart from the abovementioned, maybe the same items for your non-WP travelling companions, an extra express pass card for them, and possibly a J dessert if any are left over?

Earlier this month I had the greet with an offer of "if there's anything ...". Rather than simply say no thsnks, I empowered the greeter with a request for "bubbles from up the front".

This is a small thing and easily achieved.

I have had specific offers of some cheese and biscuits among other things. To request an actual meal from the front I believe is taking things a bit too far.

Steady on, it is not like I am asking for a free upgrade, just that the FA often asks if there is anything I would like, they don't tend to give a short list of what they are offering, personally I would think that asking for a meal from J would be too much BECAUSE people have paid for a J fare (or points) as this should be respected, just interested in what other WPs in Y reply when asked by the FA is they want anything. Mr Hancock's G & T or a whisky to settle into the flight sounds reasonable to me or maybe you think the etiquette police in F should elbow them off the FAs tray if they see them leaving the F cabin!

Your original post reads "what the asking etiquette should be". What you mean't was - what should my reply to any offer be?

Hey, if the offer is there, go the whole hog. The worst they can say is "no".

I have found success with being circumspect - "is there anything I can get you?" answered by "maybe a glass of white wine?" - ended up with a plastic soft drink cup full to the brim of excellent F chardonnay (QF94). Had similar experiences on QF29 and 30 along with QF9 with headsets, blankets. The FA's ask you and know that you can get the Y stuff yourself so generally will be accommodating in seeking something from a higher class of service if it is available.

Asking for a J meal is not only a bit much but extremely challenging service-wise - they would have to serve you prior to or after the Y pax, collect your meal separately after you were done, and could not be discreet as it would be served on proper china and not from the trolley. Best not to ask IMHO.

If they ask then that's one thing, you could more or less ask for anything if you make it sound like a joke. Like hey how bout a J meal, laugh laugh laugh.

OK, so that's not going to work. I've only ever asked for fizz from the front (got it) and pj's if it's an overnight flight (got them). I bring my own headphones, otherwise they're a great thing to ask for.

I've often found that the less you ask for, the more you can get. As usual, be polite, be thankful, don't act like you deserve this stuff, and you'll be looked after (unless you get a grumpy crewie, which can happen)

Only thing I've ever managed was a nice wine from J/F, and I'm always very happy to receive that. One of my last Y legs was SYD-SIN on the 380. Partner and I seated in 50A/50C with B blocked. CSS offered a glass of wine from F (served in a wine glass) and topped it up a few times. Nicest part was having the F wine glass so later on in the flight the Y crew just dropped off the standard Y wine, however it tasted much better in a glass!

Oddly enough, coming home I routed SIN-ADL-SYD. Half way through the SIN-ADL leg I was asleep and felt something on my shoulder. The CSM woke me with a nice plastic cup of J wine with a pleasant "great to have you back Mr N860CR". Nice gesture, timing was a bit off!

I was once given Billiecart from up the front end whilst flying in premium economy, but that was without status, and just because the FA saw me swishing around my glass a little, and I had asked what the wine was. It was very nice.

But if I was a platinum i'd feel extremely uncomfortable asking for any "extras", it kinda borderlines on DYKWIA. Not saying thats what the OP was trying to do or anything, but I really think plats should expect to get what they pay for just like anyone else.

Recently flew QF23 SYD-BKK in Y. Didn't get the greeting, and had to ask for the priority immigration card (2 times after I was given an in-coming immigration card the first time). Will be interesting to see what the upcoming LHR-SIN-MEL (QF2/QF10) flights will bring.

Sure I've read here previously that some have asked for J/F amenity kits. Given a longer or o/night flight I'd try for that or PJs.

Next time I am asked by a CSM "Is there anything I could get you to make this flight more comfortable?" I will definitely ask for a main course J meal. I expect a "Unfortunately I really couldn't get you that" but you never never know if you never never ask

On my last LAX-MEL flight, there seemed to be two WPs/WP1s/CLs up the very back of economy (or one status pax and their partner - wasn't paying much attention)... As I was sitting in 79B (exit row), it was very easy to spot the crew walking through the cabin with little 'extras' for the pax (and had I not known what to look out for, I probably wouldn't have taken any notice - they were being very subtle). I spotted that they were both given noise cancelling headphones, a J meal (on J china), express passes, J blankets, and J bubbly... not bad for one flight! At the time, I was only PS, so no love there!
