Announcement over the HSW TV system just acknowledged the tremor and said to press the "magic" button on the room hon if I have any concerns. All calm since the tremor half am hour ago.

News reporting it was 5.5 on the Ricta scale, 10km below ground level, around Moe.

Melbourne gets them reasonably often. But a 5 pointer is considerably stronger than usual.

Well there u go.....

Funny neither did our dog, continued sleeping on her bed in the lounge room... I thought dogs are meant to sense an earthquake before it happens?

My girl ran around the house barking...

I had lived in Melbourne for 5.5 years. Then I decided 15 winters were too many. But in that time I had never experienced anything I could explain as an earthquake or an earth tremor of this magnitude.

Anything over a 3 is unusual - all the ones i remember were small and only felt very locally.

5.2 is sizable. Newcastle was only 5.5.

Oh you northerners and your funny and witty remarks about Melbourne's weather... :rolleyes: Last time I checked Sydney receives as many days of rain as Melbourne with double the amount of precipitation.

In Footscray did not feel a thing! Probably one of the most geological safe places in the state. Across Melbourne and Victoria many extinct volcanoes. Western Victoria is apparently due for a couple of volcanoes...

[h=6]NEWS: "EARTHQUAKE ROCKS MOE"
=======================

A major earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit in the epicentre in Moe

... Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly muttering, "coughkin ell" and "Whadda carnt". The earthquake decimated the area causing approximately $30 worth of damage.

Several priceless collections of mementos from the Commodore Appreciation Society and the Moe Progress Hall were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed.Many locals were woken well before their welfare cheques arrived.

Moe Radio reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered, still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in the area.

One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Jerry Springer the next morning".

Apparently though, looting, muggings and car crime carried on as normal.

The Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Vegemite to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, which include benefit books, flannelette shirts, jewellery from Priceline and bone china from Safeway

*************** HOW YOU CAN HELP ****************

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing, parcels for those unfortunate to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after. Items most needed include: baseball caps, tracksuit tops (his and hers), Shell Suits (female), white sport socks, sturdy boots And any other items usually sold in Op Shops.

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same. Required foodstuffs include, Fruit Loops, Kebabs, McDonalds, KFC, ice cream and cans of Tooheys Red, Bacardi Breezer, or UDL.

If you would prefer to donate money, 25c buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms; $5.00 buys chips, saveloys and gherkins, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9; $10.00 will pay for a packet of Longbeach extra milds or Horizon 30's and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.

PLEASE do not send tents for shelter, as the sight of posh housing is unfair on the population of the neighbouring areas.

END OF NEWS STORY[/h]

The one we had in KGI a few years back was only a 5.2 and we lost a few buildings. They were late 1800 earlie 1900 hundreds buildings though.

I hope all is well, we still have after shocks in KGI so I'm hoping you do not suffer this for a long period.

Gotta confess I had dozed off in front of the box and thought I must have been imagining it. Very mild shaking here in SE suburbs. Have certainly felt stronger in Melbourne, though not for a helluva long time.

My daughter in Moe says she thought her house was going to come off the stumps.

Her husband slept through it.

Ahhh nice to see another Gippsland person on here...I am originally from there

I felt it in North/West suburbs of Melbourne

I was working in a building in Melbourne CBD at that moment and I felt the building swaying considerably. In fact as it was going on I got quite nervous. It did seem to go on for quite a while. I've never felt anything like it.

Yep. Felt it here in Brunswick.

I was at a pub in Brunswick and didn't feel it (my feet were on a bar stool and I was tapping them).

I was with 2 friends and all of our phones rang at nearly the same time. (all swmbo's) It caused a bit of mirth for us.
