so what else is new? Life goes on - business goes on

Indeed .. found this comforting little homily in an old book…..to light your way as it were….😊

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me

so what else is new?

a handful of people in China have a bit of a cough and sniffle and terminal pneunomia and governments are refusing entry and transit for recent travelers to China and also there are quarantine measures for recent China travelers.

That'd be new.

If you are flying SQ to China good luck transiting Singapore.

No. 1 would require SIng Govt to reverse their transit / entry restrictions so I can get home and No. 2 a pretty definitive acceptance that Coronavirus has pretty well been contained and infection rates decreasing - then would seriously consider it - right now I think it is a dead duck but never say never and we continue to monitor - mountains can be moved in a week so who knows

Apart from catching the virus, this would be a big concern:

Australians are being warned against travelling to China as coronavirus continues to spread and take more lives.
Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said people were still travelling from Australia to China in defiance of official advice.
“Those people frankly are putting themselves in a difficult situation,” Mr Dutton told the Nine Network on Friday.

“They would find it very hard to get back to Australia in certain circumstances and you can’t guarantee their return, particularly if China shuts its borders.”
The virus has killed 636 people and infected more than 30,000.
“Putting yourself into that zone makes for a very difficult situation,” Mr Dutton said.

....and Scotty from marketing intimated (not explicitly) today the next flight out organised by the govmt will be the last.

Pretty unlikely in my opinion:

Cruise ship kennel cough is rampant and does include fever, harsh cough and runny nose, all the symptoms of corona virus. I’ve picked up this twice, interestingly both on QM2 because people show no consideration for other passengers and never isolate into their cabin.

I think cruise lines bring mass infections on themselves with their never ending focus on building bigger and bigger ships, cramming more and more people into what is basically a limited space. There's no refunds on the multi-thousand dollar cruise fare for self-isolating so I'm not surprised people don't self-isolate. (Did you? I didn't when I got a cough onboard recently, I coughed into a tissue or if caught short into my elbow, not into my hands). Even when they concede that an illness has been caused onboard, the cruise lines will try and get away with a 'future cruise voucher' instead of even a partial refund.

To answer the OP's question, no I wouldn't be planning to go to China in the foreseeable future, nor for that matter anywhere else until the global hysteria has settled down and we know more facts about the virus, how it's spread and how dangerous it actually is.

the people in an inside cabin have only now been able to access fresh air on deck but just for a short period of time. They are stuck in a small cabin with no windows - just a box. They showed a picture of a family with two teenagers in bunk beds.

The number of pax supposedly onboard Diamond Princess is less than full capacity. I don't understand why Princess is making 4 people endure 2 weeks in an inside cabin. There would have to be other empty cabins onboard that they could put 2 of them in. The whole ship is going to have to be disinfected anyway so using a few more cabins isn't going to have any significant effect on infection control or the damage to Princess's bottom line out of this debacle.

Yeah, the FCC doesn’t really work for me either. And I am currently being email bombed with all these cruise specials. That just aren’t special at all when I compare the cost of what I’m currently booked for in July.

I didn’t self isolate because it wasn’t until the last day I experienced the symptoms. It was the table mate who kindly shared it with me because didn’t self isolate and in fact had a drinks session in his cabin a couple of days before but he hadn’t told us he was feeling poorly. The last night he was a no show because he was too ill to come to dinner. love_the_life and I were then staying in a hotel in Dubai in a shared room, but luckily a booking kerfuffle gave us a huge upgrade and I was able to sleep in a different room. I don’t think she developed the cold but I was on immune suppressant treatment that had obviously done the job of suppressing my immune system too well.

I guess they can’t put people in other cabins as they are undergoing strict isolation and that would mean a whole of unknown contact happening again. Japan is being very strict with what they can and can’t do onboard so it’s like the Captain has lost control of his ship. If they change the isolation again, then any new cases means the counter sets to zero if a new case emerges.

Well, if that is so, it will be hopefully a death knell for Princess making people stay in inside cabins, presumably to make the clean up easier and faster.

gmoh I have been delaying final decision til closer to dep date - but clearly as the situation continues the 95% sure will cancel a week ago is 99% sure will cancel today - hence the OT dinner on 19th when I was scheduled to be in PEK - TI clearly not the only consideration - Pete Mutton’s no go advice pretty well kills all plans

Totally agree with the writer in that link @boomy .
To add. The current 2019-2020influenza season in US is quite bad. Millions infected, thousands died. Not a squeak anywhere about quarantine, lockdown or WHO intervention.
And this happens every year.

Then there are the cruise ship Norovirus outbreaks. A bit of gastro right?. Cruise ships just go into lockdown for a few days
Estimates are that 500-800 people die from Norovirus each year in the USA. Not a squeak from anyone.

Because nCOV is new (novel) it’s got worldwide headlines. Coupled with questionable Chinese cultural habits such as bat soup, the headlines gain enormous attention.

There are grave consequences to locking down an entire city of millions. Possibly causing the medical facilities in that city to be overwhelmed. China is possibly sacrificing the millions in Wuhan to save the world?. It’s not as easy and clear cut as it appears.

#156 👍 - life goes on - oh oh here come the Bible quotes again.

At some point in time normality will return - a week? A month? Who knows but we will travel again - hell we might even catch a cold in China - or USA - or Gold Coast even - gotta love hysteria huh?
