Woolworths gift card thread

Interesting experience at the register today when grabbing the last ten CNY cards.

I tried to put two through with the actual groceries and pay with the EGC, knowing exactly what would happen.

The checkout operator gladly tried, and failed, so I EGC’d the groceries and put the CNY cards through on the Edge.

But when the computer said “no” the checkout operator explained to me a scam... “in which people had been buying discounted Woolworths Gift Cards and using them to buy things like EFTPOS gift cards during promotions and ending up with a cash profit.”

“Outrageous!” I replied, while silently disagreeing with his definition of scam.

But if the concept has been explained in that much detail to a high school checkout operator I think the golden days are over. Which we already knew.

I'm not sure I would have ever called it a 'scam'. It was a gap in the system permitted by Woolworths which they knew about for a long time and took years to shut down.

I see that you've changed your tune Dr R.
Not really. I did say 'much point'.

In previous times I would have bought hundreds :) So 60 is a drop in the bucket and these cards will be/have been used for council rates and foreign currency purchase.

Most I've found of these $88 cards is 20 in one store. Bought about 60 so far. Used them all to buy some US dollars today. Good getting credit card points on a transaction that I would normally not use a credit card for.
Hadn't thought about using for buying currency.
Would you mind letting me know how you do this?
Thanks

Thanks
1. Walk into the store selling the currency. (I've used The Currency Exchange and Travelex in the past)
2. Tell them what currency you want.
3. When they ask for payment tell them you're paying by EFTPOS split across multiple cards.

Great. Thanks for quick reply.

Tried to buy some $88 cards today but upon reaching the counter was told that they couldn't sell it to me because there was something wrong with the system and it wasn't activating these cards. Never heard that excuse before although I can't see why they would lie about it.

Unfortunately self serve wasn't an option as its one of those stores that won't allow gift cards at self serve.

Purchased 1 on Sunday. No problems.

UPDATE: Just checked, and this is definitely a different interface to what I experienced on Sunday.

purchased yesterday no problems

today with the new interface, I see it as "payment pending" on my credit card (multiple times as I tried many times).

however woolies keep saying payment cannot be authorised.

really annoying - hate it when they try to "enhance" their website - everytime they do something it screws up my purchases! if it aint broke stop tinkering with it!

if anybody has success, please let me know.
