Hi,
Has anyone had experience using a Wise debit card internationally ?
Thinking of obtaining one for use in Europe and the UK.

Ended up downloading the New Perm app to my phone, (and it worked fine) only transferred $10.00 to make sure all goes ok.
I don't do banking on my phone, or Apple pay etc.
Newcastle Perm has the least amount of money in it, so looks like when I travel I will have to have the app if I want to add funds while overseas.

Thank you all for your responses.

Just tried Comm again, both bpay and transfer and here are the error messages I am getting.

The first one is a BPay screen but Wise takes funds in as bank transfers (instead of bill payments).

With the second one, the bank transfer, is it possible that CommBank requires you to first add a new recipient before you can pay to them? That's what one of my banks needs: you can pay only to listed recipients which means that you first add the details and then can use their 'Pay to this recipient' type of a function.

How are you getting $$ onto your Wise cards?
I dont have banking on my phone, so PAY ID not available, the bsb supplied by wise 774 011 is not recognized by Commbank or Newcastle perm.
I dont want the cash advance fee by using another credit card.
Right now I am NOT happy with Wise.
I've happily used payid through internet banking, so might be worth revisiting that

I have been using my Wise debit card for about 5 years without a single issue (touch wood). I buy the currencies I want to use and pay with PayID. I maintain several currency balances. I also add some A$'s so I can do instantaneous conversions within my account, if required. The first PayID payment is delayed by 24 hours for security reasons. After that it is instantaneous. I recommended the Wise card to Swiss friends who reside in Oz and they just load A$'s and let Wise do the conversion each time. They have used it all over Europe without an issue. Wise use the current mid-market exchange rate to make the conversion which has been very favourable compared to the alternatives.

But is it any better than just using an Oz debit card with no international transaction fees?

Unless the Bank changes its terms and you don't know about them. Wise will lock in different currencies so you know the exchange rate and even if accessing AUD their exchange rate is excellent. As is ING.

Yes, but you’re second guessing what the AUD is going to do - swings and roundabouts.

With interest rates at 5+ %, I’d rather leave the cash in AUD until I need it.

Yeah, the AUD is currently buying around 100 JPY and we're going to Japan in June/July, but for all I know the AUD could be buying 105 JPY by the time we go so I'd rather not lock anything in.

It's the best exchange rate in 10 years I understand. Its all a gamble.
and if you’re hopping on a plane tomorrow, it possibly makes sense to lock in a rate (without a 3% penalty) but if you’re going in 3 or 5 mths - who knows…🤷‍♂️

No but frankly there aren’t many of these left without conditions. I like the ability to transfer to Wise virtually instantaneously and no conditions unlike say ING.
Heaps of debit cards. No so much CCs.

Yes its called exchange rate "risk". If you are not prepared to watch the rate and buy when it is (in your own view) acceptable then earn your interest and potentially lose on the exchange rate change. Wise also allows you to set a buy rate that they execute when it is reached BUT you need the A$'s in your account to facilitate the conversion. He who hesitates......

“Hedging”.

In recent years when interest rates on savings were close to zero, I’d happily take out extra cash in the US, UK, Euro if the then exchange rate was good and I knew I was returning within 12 mths etc. But with less and less cash required these days, I only maintain a small contingency.

Yes, I can see the merit in this. Of course, if you luck out and the forex continues to improve, just use another card at the spot rate and hopefully use Wise on the way down.

Anyone use wise card in Taiwan? Is it fee free at any ATMs?
I have used it in Taiwan, however TWD Taiwan Dollars are one of the only currencies I've used that Wise doesn't support so I loaded the equivalent in Australian Dollars. I went to the nearest seven eleven to my hotel which had an ATM fee of $100 ($4.8 AUD) but no withdrawal fee charged by Wise
