We had 90 people here last weekend for my husband's birthday (we have 60+ a couple of times a year) so here's a couple of my thoughts:
Agree purchasing glasses. I have the ikea red wine glasses ~$5.50 for 6 & two boxes of 60 flutes from DM a couple of years ago (ikea flutes are yuk)
We had a keg this year- not cheaper, you risk losing any not finished (we had maybe 10% left, but that's 5lts of beer!) but SO GOOD for the recycling bin situation!
I work on 6.5 drinks per person (assuming 5 glasses wine per bottle, 6 per sparkling, 24 drinks to a slab). Some people bring stuff, despite us saying no need to.
I found that purchasing wine over time spread the cost & saved me $$. For example, I saw NV Chandon at first choice for $18 & swooped.
Last year for simplicity we had 3 whites & 3 reds, but (we found) our friends like options. Yup, there were prob 20 diff reds open at one stage, but they all / mostly got finished.
Water, lots of water. Grab some of those 5ltr jars with taps from ikea / kmart / wherever & chuck in some different fruit & ice. I have glass tumblers from ikea for this. I used to buy a case of San pellegrino, but I hate the idea of shipping glass & water half way around the world & also avoid plastic where possible.
Also get some tubs for your cold drinks (mine are metal ones I bought locally, but they are available everywhere)
Don't stress about having a bazillion glasses (if you can store them) as everyone will borrow them from you for future parties & you'll be guaranteed an invite ;-)
Despite it being summer, we always go through more red wine than I expect. Red : white : sparkling is 40% : 30% : 30%
Sauv blanc also polarises people. So does reisling (I am surprised those two were the most leftover) Pinot Grigio is the universal wine for our crew (& Shiraz)
And because this is AFF ;-) every time 1st choice or Liquorland had a bonus FB offer, I jumped on the offer.
Have fun!
