Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

If the cellar conditions were ideal, you never know. Report back. Certainly looks interesting.

There were a heap more, but I essentially grabbed all the Tawny's (approx 5). There were some whites and some Shiraz Ports too (which I don't like so let them go, mate said he'll sell them at his Lion's Auctions)

All seem to be South Australian wines from what I could tell on the labels. Unfortunately no Grange :p

Got an email from CellarOne hocking a few unremarkable deals so I thought I would jump on and see what's up with Accolade Wine lately. A few decent specials on some Bay of Fires stuff, and St Hallet but nothing worth posting here.

Anyway, I saw I had 0 C1 points and I was 'Bronze' tier, and I was wondering what I had to do to get to 'Silver'. Turns out you need 100,000 points at 20 points per dollar; that means you need to spend $5000 to simply get to the second tier of their membership. Spend another $2000 and you can make 'Gold', and then spend another $5000 and you can be 'Platinum' (!)

It's not clear if the C1 points expire, so perhaps it's lifetime spend and you can get 20k by referring a buying member, but no benefits are listed except getting more points per $ spent - which you can cash in for truly marginal cashback rates. If you spent the $12,000 required to reach platinum you would get $300 back.

For context if you spend $5000 at CellarDoor you are immediately top tier status and get given ~$400 of wine for free plus a $35 birthday voucher. At CellarOne you would get $100 back.

I wonder how the C1 loyalty program is going...

I know this is old news, but I can't get over the ridiculous markup of wine at restaurants and hotels.

Bin 28 is $148 at the restaurant I'm at, and at my hotel Dandelion Vineyards is $184!! You can get it at liquorland for $24!
That's insane, we've been to some fine diners where the mark up was 3-5x. Usual restaurant mark up is probably 2.5?

Where was this at?

Simple solution, don’t support these places.
When choosing restaurant I try to look at the wine list, if marked up too high then move on to next option. Greedy owners will only learn if their revenue suffers.

Hotel was the Langham, and restaurant was somewhere on the Southbank in Melbourne
BYO? We'll probably be visiting France Soir, Scopri when we visit - plus other joints where I assume the mark up will be reasonable (haven't checked yet) but thinking Public Wine Shop.

Penfolds Bin 389 is $79 at Costco for 2020 vintage at the moment. Would have been a better buy at their Docklands store

One reason why I like the Duke in ADL.
Wine is not much more than cellar door price. Mind you, the Duke is not a "proper" restaurant as it's a pub serving great food.

Bin 28 roughly three times RRP, sounds about right 😐
