Window shade etiquette

I nearly always have an aisle, but I do think the person near the window can operate the shade to their requirements. Even if I'm having a snooze it is nice to have the warm sun streaming in sometimes.

Hope you are never sitting next to me. Trust me, if I want to get out of my window seat and go down the aisle, I will.

So we agree that the aisles and windows on a plane are a shared resource for everyone's use? Goodo!

(That wasn't so hard, was it?)

We were flying back from BKK in July, and it was about an hour after dawn. The cabin was dark, blinds drawn, most PAX sleeping.

Until one of the two <redacted> on the East side of the cabin pulled the blind up to look out at what could only have been the ocean. It was like someone had set of a small nuclear device.

If I thought I wouldn't have got arrested I would have thrown something at them. Maybe some luggage. Or an anvil.

It was completely unneccesary, disruptive, and inconsiderate.

Many hours earlier the pair (a middle aged married couple) were complaining to the FA about their gluten free/wheat free/veganvegetarian f*#%ing meal and carrying on like a pair of 3 year olds.

So, the etiquette? Try to be considerate to your fellow pax. Of course you can't please everyone, but p*%#ing everyone off is not the way to go.

I've almost had fisty cuffs with some Germanic moron who reckoned I broke his knee caps, shattered his femur and gave him a compound fractured pelvis when I reclined my seat without getting his permission. Vanker!

The simple reality is that we have developed into a society of wanting everything our way all the time.

So shut your blind and quit coughing when my seat is chronically reclined!

Oh, and it's $5 if you want to get past this gatekeeper on the aisle :)

Definitely agree on that one. If anything, it has now gotten to the point where I've learnt to stop thinking about others when I'm travelling in Y, since nobody else would be thinking about me.

Very good.

I suppose the person behind you is not allowed to touch their IFE screen either. That is if they are able to watch the IFE with you chronically reclined.

And since you have chronically reclined at your convenience the person behind with now very limited personal space needs to find a way out of their seat without using your head rest?

So in your society everyone else is selfish?

I've never had a problem watching the IFE with the person in front of me reclined - that's why the screen can be angled. I have, however, had a problem watching the IFE with the window shades open on a day flight.

I agree. Reclining doesn't affect the IFE watching too much but when the person next to the window is leaving the shades open because he wants to read or look at the view, it can really disturb the IFE watching.
I don't really know what's the best way to behave in a situation like this. I never ask the person next to me to close the shades. On a long flight the FAs will usually ask for the shades to be closed but on a short Dom flight it can be very annoying to watch the IFE with the sun reflecting on the screen.

I've never asked anyone to put the shades down either. I figure in a short flight I can read if I can't watch the IFE - long haul I might be more bothered but as you say, the FAs generally ask people to lower the shades. As a side note, I once asked someone in front of me not to recline - but only because they had reclined before takeoff, but once the FAs were seated and I didn't feel it was safe. I got snarled at for my trouble - "What are you, the seat police?"

"Annoying"

Doubly more so when you are in F, boomy !

One of my most memorable flights was PER-SIN as the pilot moved around the high monsoon clouds.

OTOH if the sun were shining directly in the window, I would be inclined to ensure the blind was down.

But also I would a lot more agreeable if you were able to "keep" an audio channel while watching the flight path...

Maybe I wander too far
