Will I get a refund if we don't actually take the flight after checking-in?

Help required.....

A friend of mine as never been on an aircraft (hard to believe I know)

My question is, if I book a fully flexible Qanta's fare, check in for the flight, but my friend backs out of taking the flight due to nerves, would I be able to get a refund????

I have phoned Qantas, but am just being told I'll lose 5000 point?? I've explained I'll NOT be using points for the flight, but the answer given to me is the same.

Hope someone can help..... or my friend doesn't back out at the gate :(

Cheers

Fully Flexible fares are refundable at any time - compare the two fare rules on the website (Flexi Saver vs Fully Flex) - Flexi Saver cannot be refunded after the time of departure, Fully Flex can be refunded afterwards and thus permits refundable no-shows.

do they have a fear of flying, or have they just never seen the need?

I learnt the hard way last year with VA that if you use OLCI for a flight you can no longer get a refund even on the VA Flexi Fare. My situation was using OLCI the night before a 6am flight, woke up and realised I couldn't sit on a plane for 2h (I won't explain but I'm sure you can work it out) and when I called the VA GCC was told it could no longer be cancelled / credited etc. Sounds like QF have a better set of fare rules.

I wouldn't count on it. I think that once you check in, whether OLCI or at the desk, you're expected to board the plane (because if you have checked luggage and dont board, they have to unload, etc) so I doubt that refunds for 'no shows' includes checking in and then not showing up. However I stand to be corrected.

Wouldn't the best thing to do be to not do OLCI just in case your friend has a case of the nerves before getting to the airport?

Absolutely, if you have checked luggage it is another matter entirely, but the fare rules definitely permit you to cancel at any point, including after the time of departure. I would suggest not checking bags and not OLCI if there is any doubt, but your rights are still there :)

awesome !! we are only taking cabin luggage (again hard to believe for a girl) booking tickets tonight...hope i don't blow $1000.

Thanks everyone for your help, worse thing that could happen.......I'll ditch my friend

I once OLCI'd for a Qantas flight (cheap fare) then cancelled before midnight and it became a credit. This was in 2010.

This reminds me of the "F lounge" meeting where someone purchased a fully refundable F ticket. Went to the lounge. Then said they had a meeting and refunded the ticket.

A fully flexible is fully refundable but I thought once checked-in that the flight is no longer refundable.

P.S. Going off-topic and I am not a doctor but I would have thought 1mg Xanax would remove all fears of flying related to anxiety.

I would've thought once you've checked in, that means that particular seat is no longer available for sale, it the extra weight is not given to Freight. Therefore it would be logical that means the ticket cannot be refunded, probably best to not check in until you are there at the airport and certain you will be flying.

Checking in is merely an intention to fly, it does not affect a tickets refund status whatsoever, I have got a credit shell on a cheap QF fare (rede deal) after check in when it was part if a return journey same day and I realised I had to stay the night. The agent was able to uncheck in me and process the credit.

.

This is one of the differences between qantas and virgin. On virgin, if you have checked in, there is no refund. On qantas, getting a credit or refund is still available.

Correct, unless you get Virgin to uncheck you in, so you don't fall into the no show category!

It's the fare rules that govern whether or not an airfare is refundable or not. Should you have done OLCI then subsequently find that you cannot travel, let the gate agent know asap & they will uncheck you in.

You would then just follow the normal steps for a refund for the flight just as you would had you not checked in.

I don't know what the reason is for DJ not being able to do this because if you have done OLCI then do not end up travelling they still have to uncheck you in anyway.

That is good to know.
